Comparison of Heavy Metal and Disinfectant Resistance of S. aureus and Enterococcus Isolates with Antibiotic Resistance Profiles

Received: 31 July 2024;  Published: 05 January 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2501278

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most significant threats to our present and future. Recently, it has been suggested that antibiotic-resistant microorganisms also exhibit resistance to heavy metals and disinfectants, and these resistance profiles may interact with each other. Microorganisms can be exposed to heavy metals and disinfectants in different ways in various environments. They are especially likely to be exposed to quaternary ammonium compounds used in the food industry or heavy metals due to tap wat [...]

Possible Preventive Effect of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. Essential Oil on Some Neurodegenerative Disorders

Received: 10 June 2022;  Published: 08 October 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2204140

Abstract

The present article describes some characteristics of the effect of essential oil (EO) extracted from Ziziphora clinopodioides harvested from Armenian highlands on microglial cell lines (BV-2 wild-type (WT) and acyl-CoA oxidase1 (ACOX1)-deficient (Acox1–/–) cells). The mutant cell line was used as a model to investigate cellular oxidative damage following EO treatment. The main components of the tested EO were pulegone, isomenthone, 1,8-cineole, piperitone, and neomenthole, with concentrations of 42.1%, [...]

Modeling of Autonomous Microgrid Operated at Medium-Voltage Level and at Constant Frequency and Study of Its Voltage Profile

Received: 06 December 2022;  Published: 17 February 2023;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2301009

Abstract

To increase power level in an autonomous microgrid, higher voltage is necessary. In this paper, detailed Matlab/Simulink modeling of a microgrid operated at medium-voltage level and at constant frequency has been conducted. Modified boost converter and medium-frequency transformer isolated DC/DC converter are adopted for both solar energy and wind energy harnessing in order for them to be connected with the microgrid. This paper further adopted a differential evolution (DE)-based method to carry out load flow analy [...]

Life-Changing Bubbles: A Simple Solution That May Help Many

Received: 20 February 2023;  Published: 24 August 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2303247

Abstract

As the medical world continues to search for ways of improving the swallowing of many millions of Dysphagia sufferers around the world, this paper is devoted to presenting the case for carbonated water to be considered as a potential solution for many. The effectiveness of carbonated water (CW) in the rehabilitation of Dysphagia has been studied periodically over the last thirty years and some significant positive results have been recorded – but it is now proposed that further research should be directed to examin [...]

Modeling Water Quality of AMD along the Flow Path

Received: 30 October 2022;  Published: 28 February 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2301023

Abstract

The water balance is severely disturbed in post-mining landscapes like Lusatia/Germany. Mine waters (amd) enter the environment and spread in groundwater and surface waters. Groundwater containing high amounts of pyrite weathering products flows into receiving waters due to lignite mining for several years. The Chair of Wassertechnik & Siedlungswasserbau at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg/Germany has developed a subsurface rehabilitation method using microbial sulfate reduction over the [...]

4Active Intervention for Promoting Physical Activity and Cognitive Flexibility Among Older Adults

Received: 03 July 2022;  Published: 26 December 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2204218

Abstract

Physical activity is essential to delaying cognitive decline and preventing cognitive impairment in older adults. We designed and implemented two-level 4Active intervention for older adults living in retirement communities. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the 4Active intervention in increasing physical activity and cognitive function in older adults. Fifty-eight eligible older adults with a mean age of 83.83 years (76.3% females) living in two retirement communities voluntarily participated in this [...]

Yoga as a Potential Tool for Filling Implementation Gap in Promoting Better Mental Health in Geriatric Age Group at Global Level: A Scoping Review

Received: 18 June 2023;  Published: 05 August 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2403284

Abstract

This scoping review aims to review the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for improving mental health outcomes in the geriatric population globally. Yoga is practiced by millions worldwide. Since practitioners of yoga claim to have calmer minds and better psychological and physical health, this topic needs to be reviewed at length. There is a considerable treatment gap worldwide in treating mental disorders, especially in old age, and there is a shortage of low-cost, feasible, and acceptable prev [...]

Young Adult’s Mental Health Literacy in Relation to Depression and Their Attitudes Towards Complementary Medicine Practice

Received: 11 July 2022;  Published: 09 October 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2204047

Abstract

Depression and mental health-related issues are increasingly prevalent in young adolescents and adults and so is the use of Complementary Therapies (CTs) to treat depression. Systematic reviews have found that, of all CTs, acupuncture, exercise, and the herbal remedy St John’s Wort have the greatest amount of evidence for efficacy in treating depression. We aimed to assess Mental Health Literacy (MHL) levels in the treatment of depression and Complementary Therapy’s (CT) usage in adolescents and adults. Surveys wer [...]

Removal of As(III) from Water by Cellulase Templated TiO2: A Photocatalytic Oxidation Conjugated Adsorption Process

Received: 16 July 2022;  Published: 09 September 2022;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2203025

Abstract

TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared using cellulase as a biotemplate through a hydrothermal process. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized based on physicochemical techniques and was used to remove As(III) from contaminated water. The cellulase templated TiO2 photocatalyst (TiO2-cellulase) had a large specific surface area, which reached 166.6 m2·g–1. It also had a strong oxidation ability and, thus, behaved well in both photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) and dark adsorption. The pH of the solution h [...]
