Mental Health Service Users' Experiences of Receiving Ear Acupuncture as a Complement in Psychiatric Care in ICELAND – A Qualitative and Quantitative Pilot Study

Received: 19 December 2024;  Published: 15 April 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2502018

Abstract

Depression, insomnia, cravings, and anxiety are significant and often long-lasting health problems. As medication has limited effect and often side effects, complementary methods such as ear acupuncture are used in mental health care. To describe mental health care users' experiences of ear acupuncture, including ratings of sleep, anxiety, depression, stress, pain, and cravings. This mixed methods study included in- and outpatients at a mental health rehabilitation service in Iceland. Standardized ear acupuncture ( [...]

Impact of Sex and Age at Lung Transplantation on Long-Term Survival of Patients with Cystic Fibrosis

Received: 20 November 2022;  Published: 01 March 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2301176

Abstract

Careful selection of lung transplant (LT) recipients with cystic fibrosis (CF) may improve outcomes; therefore, we studied the impact of sex and age at the time of LT on long-term survival of patients with CF. LT recipients with CF who received post-LT care at our center between July 1, 2007 and April 30, 2021 were included. The primary outcome was death or retransplantation. Cox proportional hazard analysis and the Kaplan-Meier method were used. Of 59 included LT recipients, the median age at first LT was 28 (22, [...]

Photodegradation of Polyethersulfone (PES), Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) and Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Microplastics via a Metal Organic Framework Namely ZIF-8/ZnO/C

Received: 27 August 2024;  Published: 17 October 2024;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2404019

Abstract

The aim of this study was to photodegrade the Polyethersulfone (PES), Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microplastics using Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/Zinc oxide/Carbon (ZIF-8/ZnO/C) nanocomposite generated under laboratory conditions. The produced nanocomposite was analysed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Photo Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra (DRS) and Electron Spin R [...]

Association between Liver Stiffness and Gastro-Esophageal Varices in Chronic Liver Diseases

Received: 12 November 2018;  Published: 27 December 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.hg.1804012

Abstract

Objective: Elastography is a non-invasive examination method that can estimate the extent of liver fibrosis, measured as liver stiffness (LS). We examined the relationship between gastro-esophageal varices and the LS and how to predict esophageal varices and varices bleeding by LS. Methods: From 2014 to 2016, we conducted a retrospective study of 138 subjects, all of whom were patients with chronic liver disease, including NAFLD, alcoholic liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, viral hepatitis, and others. LS [...]

“Welcome to Our World”: Experiences of Persons Living with Dementia Prior to and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Received: 20 June 2023;  Published: 10 August 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2303178

Abstract

People diagnosed with dementia are experts on living with the disease, yet their perspectives are often overlooked in research and practice. The pandemic has amplified health inequities among older adults, but the impact of the pandemic on the lived experience of people living with dementia remains unclear. This qualitative study used a series of 2 virtual focus groups with people living with dementia (N = 7) to explore challenging situations and emotions experienced by community-dwelling people living with dementi [...]

The Role of Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Lung Transplantation for Cystic Fibrosis

Received: 11 December 2024;  Published: 03 March 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2501239

Abstract

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that significantly impacts respiratory function, leading to progressive lung damage and ultimately respiratory failure. Lung transplantation (LTx) is a critical intervention for CF patients with end-stage lung disease, offering improved survival and quality of life. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) plays a pivotal role both preoperatively and postoperatively in optimizing outcomes for LTx candidates and recipients. Pre-transplant PR interventions, including exercise programs, [...]

Age-Related Pathologies and Life Span

Received: 27 July 2023;  Published: 11 October 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2304253

Abstract

Both from a healthcare and a socioeconomic perspective, research on senescence is increasingly essential. Indeed, in industrialized countries, the increased human longevity confronts medicine with many old patients with age-related pathologies. The paper reviews the biological theories on aging, the impact of reactive oxygen species, telomers, epigenetics, and genetics (e.g., gerontogenes) on-age-related pathologies. Also, the paper reviews available and under research therapeutic approaches (e.g., senolytics) aime [...]

Is Electrocatheter-Mediated High-Voltage Pulsed Radiofrequency of the Dorsal Root Ganglion an Effective Adjuvant to Epidural Adhesiolysis in the Treatment of Chronic Lumbosacral Radicular Pain? A Retrospective Analysis

Received: 19 November 2022;  Published: 29 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2302171

Abstract

This study aims to determine if high-voltage PRF could effectively adjunct epidural adhesiolysis (EA) in treating patients with chronic lumbosacral radiating pain (LSRP) and neuropathic characteristics. A total of 409 patients suffering from a single leg-radiating pain lasting for > six months and unresponsive to previous treatments were divided into three different groups: Group 1 consisted of 227 patients suffering from LSRP in lumbar stenosis, 84 treated with EA alone and 143 with PRF-EA; group 2 consisted of [...]

Plant-Derived Nanoparticles in Cancer Therapy: A Comprehensive Review of Recent Advances and Future Prospects

Received: 04 July 2025;  Published: 18 August 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2503308

Abstract

Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of global death, and conventional therapies have limited efficacy because of their toxicity, drug resistance, and off-target effects. Plant-derived nanoparticles (PDNPs) have emerged as suitable alternatives as they have biocompatibility, biodegradability, and multifunctional therapy. In this review, we discussed the recent advancements in PDNPs for cancer therapy, including the green synthesis of PDNPs using phytochemical (flavonoids, terpenoids) reducing and cappin [...]
