“Real World” Australian Experience of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) in Adults with Severe Aplastic Anaemia.

Received: 23 June 2020;  Published: 23 October 2020;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2004121

Abstract

Acquired Severe Aplastic Anaemia (SAA) is a rare bone marrow failure syndrome, for which allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is a proven curative therapy. Despite excellent outcomes for matched sibling SAA recipients in terms of engraftment and survival, HSCT remains highly challenging in older matched-unrelated-donor (MUD) recipients, due to increased non-relapse mortality (NRM) from causes such as graft versus host disease (GVHD), organ failure and infection. We sought to evaluate our local HSCT [...]

Organic Structure-Directing Agent Free Synthesis of Mordenite with Seeds, Used as A Support for Mo Catalysts in the Transesterification of Soybean Oil

Received: 20 December 2022;  Published: 07 April 2023;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2302015

Abstract

This work prepared mordenite using seeds and without organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs). The Mo/Mordenite was prepared through wet impregnation and the catalysts’ performance was checked for transesterification of soybean oil with methanol. The mordenite zeolite was prepared through hydrothermal crystallization under static conditions with a molar composition of 6Na2O:Al2O3:30SiO2:780H2O. The catalyst samples were characterized crystallinity through X-ray diffraction, elemental composition by X-ray fluoresc [...]

Translation and Validation of “Brief Bedside Dysphagia Screening Test” in a Greek Sample of Neurological Patients

Received: 09 October 2020;  Published: 02 April 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2102165

Abstract

Dysphagia may become a threatening condition if not diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Healthcare professionals require simple, rapid, and reliable tools for the immediate evaluation of dysphagia in their daily clinical practice. The aim of the present study was the translation and validation of the “Brief Bedside Dysphagia Screening Test-Revised (BBDST-R)” tool in the Greek language in a sample of patients with neurological disorders. The present study was designed as a cross-sectional study cond [...]

Food Insecurity, Cardiometabolic Risk and Cardiovascular Disease: A Narrative Review and Call for Action

Received: 24 September 2023;  Published: 09 January 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2401006

Abstract

Food insecurity and insufficient access to affordable nutrition have been associated with increased risk for the development of multiple chronic medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease. In this narrative review, we explore the association between food insecurity and the development of chronic medical conditions that confer increased cardiometabolic risk, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. We also identify the various barriers leading to food insecurity and lack of food literacy, with an emphasis on [...]

The Usefulness of Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Chromosome Aneuploidy Informed by A Randomised Controlled Trial

Received: 29 October 2018;  Published: 22 January 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.1901061

Abstract

United Kingdom guidelines recommend single embryo transfer (fresh or cryopreserved) in the first full assisted conception cycle for women under 40 years most at risk of having twins. Based on a recent randomized clinical trial for women aged 36 to 40 years, the hypothetical effect of preimplantation genetic testing for chromosome aneuploidy was extrapolated to single transfer of every morphologically transferable embryo available from a full cycle. Offering testing to every woman seems likely to result in fewer cli [...]

Thermo-rechargeable Batteries Fabricated Using Low-cost Materials

Received: 15 February 2022;  Published: 30 March 2022;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2201011

Abstract

We fabricated three thermo-rechargeable batteries using low-cost transition metal hexacyanoferrate and determined the thermal voltage (Vcell) and discharge capacity (Qcell) per unit weight of the total active material in the cathode and anode. The obtained values were compared with the calculated values, which were determined by analyzing the temperature and capacity coefficients of the redox potential.

Art Therapy during COVID-19 with a Deaf Client Diagnosed with Schizophrenia: A Case Report

Received: 28 April 2023;  Published: 11 July 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2303028

Abstract

This case report explores the shifts in therapeutic power relations during the COVID-19 pandemic between an art therapist and her Deaf client diagnosed with schizophrenia. A therapeutic journey of two and a half years is described, accompanied by examples of the client's artwork. This case report demonstrates how a shared reality in times of global crisis enabled the rethinking of therapeutic power relations and the way art was used to shift these dynamics. The art therapist's ability to use her shared reality expe [...]

Headache Frequency and Pain Severity Following a Nerve Stimulator Implant for Chronic Migraine: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Received: 14 November 2022;  Published: 23 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2302170

Abstract

Migraines affect approximately one billion individuals worldwide. Implanted nerve stimulator devices can provide relief to some individuals who have chronic migraines refractory to other treatments. This study defines the change in headache pain severity and headache frequency following implanted nerve stimulator treatment in chronic migraineurs. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review of six databases was performed to identify all clinical trials treating at least 10 chronic migraineurs with an implanted nerve stimul [...]

The Conundrum of High Body Mass Index in Kidney Transplant Patients

Received: 19 October 2018;  Published: 19 November 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.1804026

Abstract

Obesity is on the rise and the number of end stage renal disease patients who are obese parallel this trend. There is no universally accepted guideline for wait-listing end stage renal disease obese patients in order to reduce surgical complications and improve survival of the kidney graft. Criteria for acceptance are variable among transplant centres, as do post-transplant policies. Careful risk assessment to maximise the benefits of the limited organ donor resource must be undertaken prior to waitlist an obese ki [...]

Kinetic Model for the Hydrolysis of Olive Oil by Lipase in Absence of Emulsifier

Received: 27 March 2024;  Published: 18 July 2024;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2403009

Abstract

Lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of olive oil has been studied in the absence of emulsifier. A simple mathematical model to predict the hydrolysis rate is derived from a proposed kinetic mechanism of the reaction. The hydrolytic reaction obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics with a simultaneous second-order enzyme deactivation. The model predictions closely agree with the experimental results.
