Redirecting Fetal Programming: Evidence of Interventions that May Be A Tool for Health

Received: 01 June 2018;  Published: 28 December 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.1804058

Abstract

Understanding the pathophysiology of disease can be an essential step to determining where and how to intervene for preventive or corrective health. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) has been defined in livestock species as impaired gestational development of a fetus or its parts [1]. This broad category of ailments described by low fetal weight is accompanied by susceptibility to adult onset of chronic disease through fetal programming of numerous organ systems and their functions. This concern affects humans [...]

Clinical Tolerance Trials in Renal Transplantation – Where Do We Stand?

Received: 05 November 2018;  Published: 27 June 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.1902070

Abstract

In recent years, the potential of hematopoietic stem cells, regulatory T-cells, and mesenchymal stem cells have brought about a variety of clinical tolerance trials. Every approach has yielded promising results; however, the riddle of transplant tolerance has not been solved as of yet. The results of the ongoing trials in this field will provide additional information regarding the risks and benefits of these therapy approaches.

Therapeutic Effects: The Integration of Creative Arts Therapy in Palliative Care

Received: 17 November 2019;  Published: 14 January 2020;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2001004

Abstract

The University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) implemented a Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) program offering CAT to hospitalized patients as a component of comprehensive palliative care (PC) services. The objective of this pilot program evaluation study was to evaluate short-term effects of CAT on patient symptoms and patient/family perceptions regarding their experience. The sample included adult patients hospitalized in an academic medical center who were seen by the Palliative Care Consult Service (PCCS) between October [...]

Delayed Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension after Total Pancreatectomy-Islet Auto-Transplantation

Received: 21 March 2018;  Published: 12 June 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.1802011

Abstract

Portal hypertension often occurs transiently with injection of islet cells into the portal system during total pancreatectomy-islet autotransplantation (TPIAT). We describe a TPIAT patient with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH) two years after surgery initially identified with esophageal varices on upper endoscopy. The underlying mechanism for the development of NCPH after TPIAT is unclear but infectious and immune-related pathways have been proposed. Management of NCPH is primarily treatment of complication [...]

Differential Effects of Social Network on Health in Later Life and the Moderating Role of Depression

Received: 23 March 2019;  Published: 12 August 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.1903067

Abstract

Background: Differential effects of the characteristics of social network on limitations with activities (LWA) and the quality of life (QOL) among older adults, and the moderating role of depression were studied. Methods: The data obtained from two consecutive waves of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) was examined. Results: Emotional closeness, satisfaction with the social network, and contact frequency were able to predict the QOL and not LWA. Moreover, depression was observed to moder [...]

Enhancing Biodiversity Education and Outreach for Conservation Awareness and Environmental Stewardship

Received: 15 August 2024;  Published: 02 April 2025;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2502016

Abstract

Biodiversity—the rich variety of life on Earth—is essential for ecosystem stability and resilience, which, in turn, supports human well-being. However, human activities, such as habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, and climate change, are placing unprecedented pressures on global biodiversity, emphasizing the need for urgent conservation measures. In response, biodiversity education and outreach initiatives have become pivotal in fostering conservation awareness and action. This paper critically evalua [...]

Genotyping Pneumocystis jirovecii: Impacting Our Understanding of Interhuman Transmission

Received: 04 December 2018;  Published: 17 January 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.1901060

Abstract

Pneumocystis jirovecii is an atypical fungus transmitted via the airborne route between humans. This fungus is exclusively associated with humans and almost each individual has encountered it at least once before reaching the age of two. P. jirovecii can be cleared and spontaneously resolutive in immunocompetent, whereas it can be responsible for severe Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in immunocompromised patients. In the next decades, the putative increase of the population of immunocompromised patients is likely to [...]

Experimental and Statistical Evaluation of the Interaction Effect of Recycled Aggregate and Water/Cement Ratio on Concrete Compressive Strength

Received: 07 March 2021;  Published: 28 July 2021;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2103032

Abstract

The production of concrete using recycled aggregates, obtained from the processing of construction and demolition waste, is extensively practiced worldwide. However, the effect of simultaneous adding fine recycled aggregate and the recycled coarse aggregate on the mechanical properties of concrete is still unfamiliar. This work aims to evaluate the influence of the water/cement ratio (WC Ratio), the fine recycled aggregate content (%FRA), the coarse recycled aggregate content (%CRA), as well as the interaction betw [...]

A Comparative Study of Structural, Optical and Electrical Properties of Fe-ZnO Nanoparticles Synthesized by Precipitation and Microwave Method for Photovoltaic Applications

Received: 12 May 2021;  Published: 04 August 2021;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2103035

Abstract

Iron doped ZnO (Fe-ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized using two techniques that are economical as well as scalable to yield tunable properties of nanoparticles for facilitating down conversion in an absorbing layer of a solar cell. To evaluate the suitability of Fe-ZnO nanoparticles prepared by two deposition methods, we present a comparison of optical, electrical, and structural properties of Fe-ZnO using several experimental techniques. Structural properties were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy a [...]

Do Social Isolation and Loneliness Kill People with Alzheimer's Disease?

Received: 04 October 2018;  Published: 26 November 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.1804021

Abstract

Patients with AD have shortened life expectancy than the general older population is well established. Loneliness may be another risk factor to consider if we wish to understand and improve the premature mortality of AD.
