Analysis of Correlations for the Prediction of the Entrainment Fraction of Droplets in Gas-liquid Annular Flowsby
Abstract
In gas-liquid flows, droplets that detach from the liquid film lining the internal walls of a pipe and merge with the gas flowing through the pipe follow an annular flow pattern. This work analyzes correlations for estimating the entrainment fraction of such droplets contained in the literature by comparing their predictions with experimental data also from the literature. The results of this comparative study demonstrate that the analyzed correlations do not accurately reproduce experimental conditions. This is du [...] 2479 13456 |
Next-Generation Sequencing-Based Testing in Diagnostic Oncohematology: Untangling the KnotsAbstract
With the advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS), genomic profiling of tumors has been gradually introduced into the clinical setting and has become a standard in cancer care. NGS allows convenient, rapid, and inexpensive sequencing and the commercially available NGS panels enable the detection of single or global genomic alterations of germline and somatic origin. Today, genomic mutation profiling using NGS is indispensable for disease evaluation and prediction of prognosis or responsiveness to cancer therapy.

Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals as Sources of POPsAbstract
Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a new class organic pollutant sharing some of the attributes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This opinion/short review aims to describe the properties of EPFRs that merit their recognition as an additional and potentially significant source of POPs. EPFRs are ubiquitous in diverse environments because of multiple factors: (1) organic precursors from anthropogenic, biogenic, and other natural emission sources are abundant; multiple mechanisms in PM and so [...] 2047 13445 |
How Can Acupuncture Be Used in Treating Dementia?Abstract
Background: Dementia erodes the quality of life of patients and their caregivers, and the growing dementia population threatens public finance in the health and social services. In addition to formal medical treatments, complementary and alternative medicine is applicable to dementia, in which acupuncture has become an option for prevention, remedy, and rehabilitation. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical method that uses needle penetration at acupoints (specific points throughout the body which will be sti [...] 2437 13445 |
A Review of Factors Affecting the Acute Exercise-Cognition Relationship in Children and AdolescentsAbstract
It is well documented that an acute bout of exercise has a positive effect on subsequent cognitive function in children and adolescents. However, the effect of: the exercise characteristics (i.e. intensity, duration and modality), the cognitive domain assessed, and moderating variables (such as the participant’s age, physical fitness and baseline cognitive abilities); all of which affect this relationship are poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to examine the impact of these variables on the [...] 2286 13435 |
Examination of PCDD/F Formation in Thermal Systems Using Simple Mathematical ModelsAbstract
A set of empirical models which accounts for the formation of gas phase polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD and PCDF), and solid phase PCDD/F by the de novo mechanism is described. In each case, competing formation and destruction reactions are considered to operate. The effect of the time-temperature history on their formation is then examined. At high temperatures, steady-state is reached in fractions of a second, resulting in the observed low product concentrations.Rapid cooling as found in furnaces [...] 1762 13434 |
Building New Nuclear in Finland: Crises Challenging Core Beliefs around Nuclear EnergyAbstract
This paper examines the building of a new nuclear plant as a greenfield operation in Pyhäjoki, Finland. A newly-founded energy company, Fennovoima, was granted a license by the Finnish parliament to build a new power plant in 2010. In the years following this Decision in Principle the project faced several obstacles. Through interviews with key actors, this paper identifies the interests and core beliefs associated with building the plant. It posits that, in Finland, the underlying ideas and values surrounding nucl [...] 1570 13432 |
A Review of Practical Applications of Fluid Flow and Associated Heat Transfer Modeling in WellboresAbstract
Investigations on two-phase gas/liquid flow in pipes have been under study for nearly six decades. These studies have significantly assisted in managing fluid flow in the wellbore and surface networks, leading to the separation of phases and transmission of oil and gas into the market. This study summarizes some of the main lessons learned in flow through wellbores. Besides understanding some of the fundamental principles, we focused on the practical items of interest: Conventional production scenarios for oil and [...] 1905 13425 |
Association of Telomere Length, a Cellular Aging Marker, with Depression, PTSD and HostilityAbstract
Depression, PTSD, and hostility are common mental conditions that are associated with aging. A growing body of research has highlighted the possible effects of depression, PTSD, and hostility on aging and telomere length (TL), a cellular aging marker. Individuals who exhibit excessive responses to stressors show notable circulating inflammatory responses with high cortisol reactivity, which increases cell turnover and oxidative stress and may subsequently contribute to shortened TL. This review focuses on the most [...] 2303 13415 |
Next Generation Sequencing in Autism Spectrum DisorderAbstract
Autism spectrum disorder is a clinically heterogeneous condition, characterized by social deficits, language impairment, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interest. Autism displays significant genetic heterogeneity. In the past one and a half decades, next generation sequencing has enabled identification of many variants that predispose to autism. These discoveries have improved understanding of the disease etiology of autism spectrum disorder. In this review article, we will address how development of next gene [...] 2243 13412 |
