When Immunity Falls Short: Meningoencephalitis Despite Vaccination - A Case Report

Received: 13 June 2024;  Published: 09 April 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2502246

Abstract

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) significantly impacts the central and peripheral nervous systems, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. This case report details a rare presentation of VZV meningoencephalitis in a 42-year-old woman with interstitial lung disease and connective tissue disease undergoing lung transplant evaluation who presented with a thunderclap headache and a new-onset seizure. Despite normal initial MRI findings, further investigation with PCR of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed the pre [...]

External Validation and Modification of a New Score for Predicting Mortality in Patients with COVID-19 in High Altitude Patients. A Peruvian Study

Received: 07 December 2022;  Published: 20 November 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2404271

Abstract

This study aims to validate two predictive mortality scores for patients with COVID-19 to support clinical decision-making in those who require hospitalization. The tomographic patterns found can be added to the original scores to increase their predictive power. Retrospective, analytical, observational, and cross-sectional studies were carried out in two phases. 489 medical records of patients with COVID-19 hospitalized at “Daniel A. Carrión” Hospital in Huancayo (located at 3,250 meters above sea level) were revi [...]

Ocupación de Familia: Parent-Child Stress and Coping in Rural Farm-Dependent Families

Received: 20 August 2024;  Published: 06 January 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2501002

Abstract

Farmworkers are the backbone of the agricultural economy in the US yet are disproportionately burdened with economic-related stress and adverse behavioral health outcomes. How these stressors translate to children and family well-being is poorly understood. Grounded in Transactional Stress and Coping Theory, we aimed to understand how children and families adapt and respond to the stressors associated with farm labor occupations in a rural, underserved, bi-national community. We utilized focus groups with adult chi [...]

Gut Microbial Similarity Analysis in Mono and Dizygotic Twins Discordant for Down Syndrome

Received: 05 October 2024;  Published: 03 July 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2503300

Abstract

To investigate the potential impact of the additional chromosome 21 on the gut microbiome in patients with Down syndrome (DS), two monozygotic (MZ) and two dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs discordant for DS were studied. Whole-genome shotgun sequencing was conducted to analyze the taxonomic and functional profiles of the gut microbial community in the twins and assess whether the gut microbiome composition influences the development of psychological pathologies. Sequencing generated a total of 2,338,132 reads, combined ac [...]

Illness Perceptions and Their Impact on Treatment Adherence among Renal Transplant Patients in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Received: 17 December 2024;  Published: 16 May 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2502249

Abstract

Although immunosuppressive drugs are essential and effective in improving the health status of renal transplant patients, they also make them more vulnerable to the risk of infection with COVID-19, which has become a significant concern for many patients. Perhaps this is what makes their way of thinking and perception impact their adherence to taking immunosuppressants. Therefore, this study reveals the possibility of an impact of illness perception and some sociodemographic and clinical factors on treatment adhere [...]

Best Care for the Dying, Right Plan at the Right Time: A Case Report

Received: 31 January 2025;  Published: 28 May 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2502312

Abstract

The growing number of individuals with palliative care needs has led to an increased demand for specialized palliative care teams.. However, these teams often struggle to meet the demand, requiring all nurses to recognize and provide appropriate care during a patient’s last hours and days of life (LHDL). This case report aims to highlight the importance of identifying the LHDL and implementing individualized and adjusted care plans based on the 10/40 model of care. A descriptive-reflective case report following the [...]

Cytogenetic and ISSR-Markers Polymorphism in the Population of Local Ukrainian Lebedyn Cows

Received: 18 June 2024;  Published: 31 October 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2404269

Abstract

The preservation of the fund of local breeds of agricultural animals, which are breeding materials for the creation of new ones and the improvement of existing ones, meets the FAO requirements, which are the protection of biological diversity. The study of the genetic structure of cows of the local Lebedyn breed, which was bred in Ukraine, using cytogenetic and molecular genetic methods, is aimed at establishing information about the structure of the gene pool of these animals and the uniqueness of their genotype. Effect of EVA on the Unnotched Impact Toughness of PP/HDPE/EVA Blends

Received: 29 May 2025;  Published: 24 September 2025;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2503015

Abstract

Beverage bottle caps are usually made from two primary materials: PP and HDPE. In this study, the evaluation criteria were the unnotched impact toughness and the microstructure of PP/HDPE/EVA samples produced by injection molding. The samples were tested according to ASTM D256. PP/HDPE/EVA blends were prepared with various ratios: 47.5/47.5/5, 45/45/10, 42.5/42.5/15, 40/40/20, and 37.5/37.5/25. The results showed that adding EVA to the PP/HDPE blend significantly increased the unnotched impact toughness: from 84.03 [...]
