Effect of Heat Treatment on Sliding Wear Resistance of Hybrid Aluminum Matrix Composite

Received: 22 December 2022;  Published: 12 April 2023;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2302015

Abstract

Composite materials with aluminum as matrix material have a wider amplitude of large-scale applications in engineering. Some salient features of aluminum matrix composites are, low density, low thermal coefficient of performance and low weight and high strength. Among the various series of aluminum alloy, Al6061 have been widely used by researchers due to its outstanding properties particularly as they are heat treatable. Aluminum 6061 alloys have been reinforced with various particulate reinforcements such as sili [...]

The Identification 5S nrDNA Unit Classes in Genera of Plants and Selected Non-Vertebrate Animals and Their Potential for the Study of Species Relationships

Received: 07 January 2022;  Published: 24 April 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2202152

Abstract

We have investigated the utility of the 5S nrDNA, a conserved, multicopy gene family organized into tandem repeats as a tool for genetic analyses in a wide variety of genera. Previous work in the Triticeae (Poaceae) demonstrated that the prior identification of unit classes based upon the 5S nrDNA NTS, greatly facilitates analysis. We investigated the potential of defining unit classes in other plant genera and several animal genera as a step towards future phylogenetic analyses. Our results demonstrate that in in [...]

Impact of Breeding on Free Amino Acids of Wholegrain Flour in Wheat and Role of Phenology Genes

Received: 18 August 2023;  Published: 24 November 2023;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2304023

Abstract

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is pivotal to global food security, with its energy-rich grains that are also the major vegetable protein source in human diets. Decades of primary emphasis on grain yield improvement have delivered increased gains worldwide, but the grain protein content has declined. Since amino acids are biosynthetic precursors of proteins, this research hypothesized that their contents in the wholegrain flour have also been impacted by past wheat breeding. To test this, the free amino acid content o [...]

Entropy and War, Toy Models

Received: 05 February 2025;  Published: 02 April 2025;  doi: 10.21926/rpse.2502007

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between entropy and societal dynamics, with a particular focus on the origins and implications of war. By using entropy as a measure of uncertainty and inequality, the research examines societal stability through patterns of stratification and wealth distribution. Employing simplified models of various wealth distributions, the study explores their effects on social stratification and the potential for conflict. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, it delves into [...]

Emerging Roles of Signal Transduction Pathways in Neurodegenerative Diseases. Hunting New Possible Therapeutic Molecular Targets

Received: 27 January 2023;  Published: 05 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2302234

Abstract

Illnesses following the degeneration of the nervous system can occur due to aging or genetic mutations and represent a clinical concern. In neurodegenerative diseases, loss of neuronal structure and functions mainly causes cognitive impairment, representing an increasing social burden. In neurodegenerative diseases, the progressive loss of vulnerable populations of neurons in specific regions of the central nervous system was traced to different pathological events, such as misfolded proteins’ accumulation, abnorma [...]

Gaseous Biofuels in Biorefineries: Biomethane

Received: 20 February 2025;  Published: 13 May 2025;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2502010

Abstract

The global production of biomethane is rapidly emerging as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels for energy generation. Biogas, where methane (CH4) is usually one of the main components, is generated through the anaerobic digestion (AD) of various organic substrates, including animal manure, organic wastes, and wastewater. The efficiency of the AD process depends on key operational parameters and reactor designs that optimize microbial activity and gas yield. However, inhibitory compounds such as heavy metals, [...]

Cell Level- Modeling of Aging and Rejuvenation

Received: 14 April 2023;  Published: 22 December 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2304263

Abstract

Understanding processes related to human aging and rejuvenation relies on experimental data and advanced models operating at different levels. There are several existing conceptual and specific modeling approaches. However, one of the existing tasks is compiling generic models linking properties at cell and cell-element levels to properties at systemic levels - tissue, organ, and whole body. One of the critical issues in the relevant models is the enormity of interacting components at the cell and sub-cell levels n [...]

Airway Complications after Lung Transplantation

Received: 12 September 2023;  Published: 27 March 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2401209

Abstract

Lung transplantation in patients with end stage lung disease can improve survival and quality of life. Airway complication incidence varies between 2-33%, but the true incidence is difficult to determine due to a lack of validated classification systems. There are many risk factors for post lung transplant airway complications, the most common being anastomotic ischemia, pulmonary infections, surgical technique and allograph dysfunction. Common complications include formation of granulation tissue, anastomotic sten [...]

Geochemical Assessment of the Modern Sediments of a Lake in the North of Russia

Received: 09 March 2023;  Published: 05 July 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2303038

Abstract

Core sediment (sapropel) samples were collected from Lake Okunozero, the Republic of Karelia, Russia, to assess the distribution of heavy metals and their main fractions, probable sources of pollution, and potential ecological and toxicological risks for the water body. Heavy metal concentrations were measured by the mass spectrometry method using an XSeries-2 ICP-MS. The sequential extraction of heavy metals from sapropel samples was performed using the scheme of Tessier. According to the Russian Interstate Standa [...]

Finding Positives Amidst the Negatives: A Thematic Analysis of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Canadians 55+

Received: 31 July 2022;  Published: 17 November 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2204213

Abstract

Disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic exact a toll on vulnerable populations in terms of morbidity and mortality, but they also provide opportunities for personal growth and development and demonstration of personal and collective resiliency. This inductive thematic analysis explores self-perceived negative and positive impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on 2994 Canadians aged 55+. Data derive from response to two open-ended questions included in a national online survey (View Survey (sfu.ca)) conducted between Aug [...]
