Versatile Surface Chemistry of Carbon-Based Nanoplatforms by Covalent Bonding, Non-Covalent Linking, Crosslinking, and Self-Assembling

Received: 28 July 2023;  Published: 15 November 2023;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2304034

Abstract

This mini-review discussed the best-known chemical and synthetic methodologies used in the last years to modify carbon allotropes, with an interest in nanotechnology. In this perspective, chemistry with optoelectronics applications and recent trends within bio-applications focusing mainly on graphene and its derivatives were considered. So, the mini-review intended to focus on methodologies to add functional groups with varied reactivities, polymer chemistry, and nanoscale control. These methodologies provide insig [...]

Making Sense of Senselessness: Contemporary Literary Commentaries on Dementia

Received: 20 December 2018;  Published: 17 June 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.1902056

Abstract

Alzheimer’s Disease is increasingly seen as the major health problem in developed countries supplanting cancer and heart disease. The terror with which we respond to dementia, is grounded in a view of dementia as a monstrous descent, ambushing our healthy ageing through an incursion of pathology. The pervasiveness of this view can mean that other perspectives and even the views of those most touched by the challenges of dementia remain unheard. Part of the cultural conversation around dementia is informed by [...]

Pediatric Thoracoscopic Repair of Diaphragmatic Herniation Following Liver Transplantation

Received: 09 August 2020;  Published: 05 January 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2101131

Abstract

Diaphragmatic Hernia (DH) after Liver Transplantation (LT) is a rare complication with unclear pathophysiology. Among 261 LT, we recognized six DH during the post transplant period (2.30%). All patients with DH had received a left lateral segment (LLS) reduced graft. The mean graft weight was 340g with a mean graft-to-recipient body weight ratio (GBWR) of 4.20%. LLS grafts, a GBWR > 4%, previous abdominal surgery and direct trauma during surgery can be enumerated as potential risk factors for DH post-LT. These chil [...]

A Dual-PRF Scan Mode and Adaptive Doppler-Velocity Dealiasing to Increase Radar Clear-Air Velocity Data Coverage and Usability

Received: 05 August 2022;  Published: 13 October 2022;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2204034

Abstract

By using long pulses with extended dwelling time, lowered pulse repetition frequency (PRF) and reduced Nyquist velocity, the radar measurement capability can be enhanced to increase clear-air Doppler velocity data coverage (which is beneficial for radar wind analysis and data assimilation and motivated our previous study). This potential capability is further explored (beyond our previous study) by not only modifying the existing operational clear-air scan mode with a lowered PRF and reduced the Nyquist velocity (t [...]

Physical Illness and Emotional Expression in Late Life

Received: 14 August 2019;  Published: 25 November 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.1904088

Abstract

Louise H., Ph.D was referred to me by her long-term primary care physician (PCP) who was certain that his patient was seriously depressed and in need of medication and possibly psychotherapy. My own assessment, in consultation with a neurologist, was that Louise’s problems with coping were primarily neurological, and that her issues were due to serious (and in one case embarrassing) symptoms. Her neurological problems (mild Parkinsonism and PseudoBulbar Affect, or PBA) are currently being addressed by the neurologi [...]

When Should We Raise Clinical Suspicion of DiGeorge Syndrome: Two Case Reports from a Tertiary Hospital in Indonesia

Received: 30 December 2024;  Published: 14 February 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2501285

Abstract

DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) or 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the most common genetic microdeletion in humans, with an incidence rate of 1:3000 to 6000 live births. Early detection and diagnosis of DiGeorge syndrome are challenging to clinicians due to its phenotype variability. We report two cases of DiGeorge syndrome, each demonstrating a different combination of clinical phenotypes. Two girls (2 years-3 months old and 2 years-2 months old) were diagnosed with 22q11.2DS following chromosomal microarray anal [...]

Coping and Managing ALS Disease in the Family during COVID-19: Caregivers' Perspective

Received: 13 November 2022;  Published: 31 March 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2301165

Abstract

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons, the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord that enable voluntary muscle movement. Managing ALS is complex and increasingly requires informal care, most often by the patient's companions/spouses or children. The COVID-19 pandemic posed additional critical issues, particularly the disruption of home care and the increased time caregivers spent on patient care. One aim of this research was to assess caregiv [...]

Indoor Built Environments Attended by Primary School Children and Its Microbiology: A Cross-Project Study

Received: 10 March 2022;  Published: 24 August 2022;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2203015

Abstract

Exposure to indoor pollutants may exert a significant effect on children health as they spend most of their time in enclosed environments. This research compared the association of biological concentrations with indoor characteristics and building materials in places where children spend significant time indoors. It was compared the results of two autonomous research projects conducted in Porto primary schools and households. Both the projects included a walkthrough inspection and biological measurements in indoor [...]

Cryptic Resilience: Decoding Molecular Networks in Pearl Millet for Enhanced Heat Stress

Received: 20 February 2024;  Published: 20 May 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2402235

Abstract

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), a vital cereal crop renowned for its drought tolerance, is a cornerstone for smallholder farmers in arid and semi-arid regions, ranking as the fifth most significant cereal globally. Despite its resilience, the molecular mechanisms underlying its tolerance to heat stress remained elusive. To address this knowledge gap, we subjected ten-day-old pearl millet seedlings to an unprecedented temperature of 50°C for 60 seconds. Subsequent next-generation RNA sequencing aimed to unrav [...]

An Evidence of Drug Repurposing for COVID-19 Pandemic Based on In silico Investigation from Phenolic Derivatives of Silybum Marianum Against SARS-Cov-2 Proteins

Received: 11 January 2023;  Published: 04 July 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2303186

Abstract

The outbreak of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) had a striking impact on the worldwide healthcare system within a very short period. The availability of a large number of clinical data on SARS-CoV-2, conventional precautionary majors, and treatment strategies with the existing therapeutic antiviral drug molecules also fails to control progression and disease transmission among the population. Hence, we implemented pharmacoinformatics approaches to facilitate the drug discovery by repurposing naturally available [...]
