Gastro-Esophageal Reflux in the Newborn: Pathologic Event or Does Spit Happen?

Received: 19 April 2021;  Published: 13 August 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.hg.2103060

Abstract

Infants admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) are among the most vulnerable patients in medicine and are at risk for a variety of morbidities, many of which require pharmacologic therapy. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common diagnosis in the NICU patient population and may or may not represent a truly pathologic process. Regardless, pharmacologic therapy is provided to many infants, who are already exposed to an inordinate number of pharmacologic agents, of which most are off label and hav [...]

Left Atrial Systolic Force in Hypertensive Patients with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy: A Predictor of Incident Atrial Fibrillation. The LIFE Study

Received: 20 December 2021;  Published: 09 March 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2201194

Abstract

It remains unknown whether left atrial systolic force (LASF), a measure of left atrial function, can be used as a predictor of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF). Furthermore, the effect of the treatment with atenolol and losartan on LASF is unclear. A total of 758 patients without atrial fibrillation at baseline were enrolled from the Losartan Intervention For Endpoint (LIFE) reduction in hypertension echocardiography sub-study. Participants of the LIFE study were randomized to either atenolol-or losartan-based [...]

Tungstophosphate Intercalated ZnAl Layered Double Hydroxide for Adsorptive and Visible Light Driven Photocatalytic Decolourisation of Organic Dyes

Received: 21 December 2022;  Published: 13 October 2023;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2304025

Abstract

Tungstophosphate (PW12O403-) intercalated ZnAl-Layered double hydroxide (ZnAl-PW12) was successfully synthesized through the rehydration of calcined LDH. Chemical analyses and characterizations by powder XRD, FT-IR, and Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectra confirmed the intercalation of PW12O403- ions equivalent to ~80% of the residual positive charge in the brucite layer. The efficiency of ZnAl-PW12 for decolourisation of four structurally different cationic/anionic dyes through simultaneous adsorption and photocata [...]

The Jacobs Syndrome: Clinical Case

Received: 15 October 2023;  Published: 28 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2401218

Abstract

This work describes a clinical case of a violation of sex formation in a newborn child with Y-chromosome dysomy. The diagnostic challenges related to Y-chromosome variability and associated anomalies in sex development are being considered. The work presents clinical and laboratory data for Y-chromosome dysomy. It is noted that the challenge in diagnosing disorders of sex development is associated with the polymorphic clinical manifestations of this syndrome. It is noted that the presence of Y-chromosome dysomy is [...]

How Involvement in COVID-19-Related Work Changed Nurses' Job Demands, Job Resources, and Their Associations with Burnout: Evidence from China 1

Received: 09 January 2023;  Published: 27 March 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2301164

Abstract

China adopted a “Zero-COVID” policy for nearly three years, making Chinese healthcare workers constantly involved in COVID-19-related work. However, little is known about how involvement in COVID-19-related work shaped Chinese nurses’ burnout. This study explores how nurses’ job demands and job resources are associated with their burnout by considering high and low frequent involvements in COVID-19-related work in China. This study employed a cross-sessional design. Guided by Job Demands-Resources (JDR) model, we d [...]

Oral Management in Pre-HSCT Patients: An Evaluation of Oral and Systemic Complications

Received: 14 June 2019;  Published: 21 October 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.1904088

Abstract

Objective: Hematopoietic stem cells transplant (HSCT) requires being preceded by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The neutropenia and thrombocytopenia which follows may be the possible cause of post-transplant complications. It is required that the patient undergoing transplantation is eradicated of any possible infectious focus. Currently, a uniform protocol for the oral management of these patients is unavailable. Methods: The approach for the dental management of each patient was designed as a more selective proto [...]

Mechanisms of Laser Acupuncture – Hypotheses and Evidence

Received: 14 May 2024;  Published: 15 May 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2402027

Abstract

Laser acupuncture, a rising complementary therapy, applies a low-intensity laser to acupuncture points, yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Proposed hypotheses include modulation of cellular signaling, tissue repair, and immune modulation. Laser acupuncture may stimulate energy flow, neurotransmitter release, cellular changes, immune regulation, and neuroendocrine activity. Additionally, the biophoton theory suggests an involvement of ultra-weak photon radiation from cells. Litscher et al. explore these m [...]

llmenite and Biomass Composite Nanomaterials - A Review

Received: 10 April 2024;  Published: 13 June 2024;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2402006

Abstract

Ilmenite is a mineral whose crystallinity can be altered by chemical treatment, producing TiO2 and iron and titanium-based metal nanocomposites, which are applicable mainly for photocatalysis. Porous and crystalline biomass-derived carbon materials include graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, graphitic carbon nitride, catalytically graphitized sucrose and chitosan, and activated carbon. Ilmenite-based metal oxides coupled with biomass-based carbon materials are effective in environmental remediation, especially [...]
