Experimental Phenomenology as Personalized Health Intervention: A Case Illustration

Received: 27 July 2021;  Published: 15 February 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2201008

Abstract

Experimental phenomenology is the investigation of phenomenological practices and their effects. To engage in a phenomenological practice means to focus attention on aspects of one’s experiences (e.g., sense impressions or body sensations) while adopting a specific kind of attitude (e.g., an explorative attitude) according to some set of instructions. The basic assumption is that the regulation of attention and attitudes involved in such practices may have effects on people’s health and quality of life. The present [...]

Clinical Features, Genetic Landscape and Management of Behçet's Syndrome: A Comprehensive Review

Received: 25 June 2024;  Published: 19 September 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2403261

Abstract

Behçet's syndrome is a systemic inflammatory disorder of unknown origin, presenting with diverse symptoms such as recurrent oral and genital ulcers, skin lesions, and uveitis, and can impact multiple organ systems. Diagnosis relies primarily on clinical evaluation due to the lack of specific diagnostic tests. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach to control inflammation and alleviate symptoms, utilizing treatments like corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, and biological therapies. The higher preval [...]

Crustal Reservoir Flow Simulation for Long-Range Spatially-Correlated Random Poroperm Media

Received: 30 November 2020;  Published: 19 March 2021;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2101013

Abstract

In interest of accurately modelling wellbore production in convective geothermal systems, we draw attention to two approaches to numerical simulation of crustal fluid flow. The historical "strong" approach simulates the fluid mass conservation condition on a localised finite difference mesh approximation to poroelastic continua. The more flexible "weak" approach globally enforces fluid mass conservation by in effect integrating over all numerical mesh cells. Strong formulation crustal flow simulation emerged from n [...]

Alzheimer's Disease: Parsing the Pathways Leading to the Disease Based on the Spirochete/Biofilm Hypothesis

Received: 30 December 2019;  Published: 19 February 2020;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2001107

Abstract

A pathway which highlighted spirochetes (Borrelia burgdorferi and dental treponemes) that made biofilms which led to Alzheimer’s disease has recently been promulgated. All the Alzheimer’s disease, on which this pathway was based, had been specifically confirmed both clinically and pathologically. This current work will show putative and plausible individual pathways that were studied. First and foremost, intracellular spirochetes make biofilms and concurrently make beta amyloid; this has been shown in v [...]

In Water High Yield and Selectivity of CH4 and H2 Production from CO2 Using UVC Light and a SiO2-surface-modified TiO2 Photocatalysts

Received: 25 August 2023;  Published: 05 December 2023;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2304029

Abstract

To improve CH4 and H2 formation from CO2 photoreduction using non-organic, non-laborious, and inexpensive photocatalysts, we have prepared two surface-silicate-modified TiO2 catalysts: P25-SiO2 and AmTiO2-SiO2 (amorphous TiO2) to be tested in water and using UV light. The last catalyst produces more CH4 and H2 in water than P25 (3:1 TiO2 anatase: rutile) under UV light irradiation of HCO3- and CO2; am-TiO2-SiO2 at pH = 7, produces 8 times more CH4 and H2 than P25 with selectivity at the reactor headspace of 30% and [...]

Hot Water Preparation along with Combined Solar Thermochemical Energy Storage System: Experimental Validation and Performance Simulation

Received: 18 December 2020;  Published: 14 April 2021;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2102017

Abstract

Hybrid solar thermal systems are considered to be a promising solution for delivering clean thermal energy for the building sector, especially while combining them with other renewable energy sources. Usually, solar energy production does not match the thermal energy demand, and hence the energy storage must be integrated. Thermochemical energy storage is adapted particularly to be used along with solar thermal applications. In this article, the design of the combined solar thermochemical energy storage system is p [...]

Preimplantation Genetic Screening

Received: 11 August 2017;  Published: 26 October 2017;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.1704009

Abstract

The main aim of PGS has always been to improve IVF outcome, especially in patient groups assumed to have higher rates of chromosomally abnormal embryos, such as patients of advanced maternal age. In that sense, PGS is quite different from other types of screening as discussed in other papers in this issue.Today it bears no doubt that blastocysts found to be uniformly aneuploid in a biopsy will fail to implant, or worse, will implant and lead to a pregnancy and birth carrying a major chromosomal abnormality, such as [...]

Molecular Genetic Study on VNTR-polymorphism of Two Cytokine Genes Antagonist of the Receptor of Interleukin 1 (rs2234663) and Interleukin 4 (rs8179190) Associated with Dental Caries in Children

Received: 24 December 2021;  Published: 27 June 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2202158

Abstract

In this study, we investigated VNTR polymorphisms in intron 2 of the IL1RN gene (rs2234663) and intron 3 of the IL4 gene (rs8179190) related to the development of caries in school children (N = 196) with mixed bite dentition from Krasnodarskii Krai. The genotypes A1/A1 and L/L (L-"long" alleles) (rs2234663) provided resistance to the most intensive form of dental caries. The groups of children with DFC (decompensated form of caries) were significantly different from the pooled group SFC (subcompensated form of cari [...]

Translation and Validation of “Brief Bedside Dysphagia Screening Test” in a Greek Sample of Neurological Patients

Received: 09 October 2020;  Published: 02 April 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2102165

Abstract

Dysphagia may become a threatening condition if not diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Healthcare professionals require simple, rapid, and reliable tools for the immediate evaluation of dysphagia in their daily clinical practice. The aim of the present study was the translation and validation of the “Brief Bedside Dysphagia Screening Test-Revised (BBDST-R)” tool in the Greek language in a sample of patients with neurological disorders. The present study was designed as a cross-sectional study cond [...]

Mothers’ Strategies for Promoting Children’s Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, and Screen-Related Behaviors

Received: 19 October 2021;  Published: 29 January 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2201006

Abstract

Parents model and teach early health practices that persist into adulthood by establishing a family culture through which children learn related family beliefs, values, and expectations. This phenomenological study examined the ways in which a purposefully selected group of mothers (selected due to their high scores on the Family Nutrition and Physical Activity screening tool) shaped family culture related to physical activity, addressed screen-time behaviors, and established positive eating related routines. Findi [...]
