Laccase: A Green Solution for Environmental Problems

Received: 21 February 2023;  Published: 05 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2302030

Abstract

A multicopper oxidase, laccases catalyze the four-electron reduction of the substrate with the use of molecular oxygen. Laccases are abundant in nature and can be found in virtually every form of life on the planet. Generally speaking, laccases are classified into three types: blue, white, and yellow. Plant, bacterial and fungal laccases all have the same trinuclear copper site for substrate reduction. Non-phenolic as well as phenolic molecules are both capable of being catalyzed by this enzyme. Laccases are used i [...]

Osteoporosis Etiology, Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Diet, and Treatment: A Narrative Review

Received: 26 December 2022;  Published: 09 April 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2402277

Abstract

This narrative review aimed to select, gather, and present inclusive evidence about osteoporosis etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, diet, and treatment. We searched PubMed and Google using these terms: osteoporosis AND etiology, osteoporosis AND epidemiology, osteoporosis AND diagnosis, osteoporosis AND diet, and osteoporosis AND treatment. Each title of the extracted manuscripts was read first. If deemed suitable, the abstracts of the manuscripts and text were read carefully. Afterward, the details of each term we [...]

Exploration of Molybdenum Oxide Compounds-A Review

Received: 17 February 2024;  Published: 09 August 2024;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2403011

Abstract

The evolution of nanomaterials has been critical in modifying materials at the nanoscale for specialized uses. Carbon nanotubes were initially viewed as promising for electronics, but their inability to discriminate between semiconducting and metallic phases led to the creation of quasi-two-dimensional (Q-2D) materials. Molybdenum nanoparticles are utilized as alloy additions in corrosive and high-vacuum environments. Their characteristics differ significantly from those of their bulk counterparts. This review anal [...]

Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction for Lipedema: Guidelines for a Patient-Centered, Holistic Approach

Received: 31 May 2025;  Published: 03 September 2025;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2503019

Abstract

Lipedema is a chronic, often misdiagnosed disease characterized by painful, disproportionate fat accumulation in the extremities. Commonly mistaken for obesity or lymphedema, lipedema primarily affects women and has long been thought to be resistant to dietary intervention, a belief originating from its initial description by Allen and Hines at the Mayo Clinic in 1940. However, emerging research challenges this notion, revealing that individuals with lipedema often respond positively to therapeutic carbohydrate (CH [...]

Microbial Cyclodextrin Glycosyltransferases: Sources, Production, and Application in Cyclodextrin Synthesis

Received: 11 June 2022;  Published: 22 September 2022;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2203029

Abstract

Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) is a multifunctional enzyme that hydrolyzes the α-glycosidic bond between two sugar molecules and synthesizes cyclodextrins (CDs) and other transglycosylation products. It is a ubiquitously present extracellular enzyme that offers the CGTase-producing organism the sole right onto starch substrates over other microbes. The present review provides a brief account of diversity among CGTase-producing microbes, CGTase production in different heterologous hosts (wherein ext [...]

Photobiomodulation for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Summary

Received: 29 September 2021;  Published: 17 December 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2104055

Abstract

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a highly debilitating chronic pain condition characterized by continuous regional pain disproportionate to duration and intensity of the initial damaging stimulus. In CRPS, abnormal perception, transmission, and modulation of pain by nerve cells and the autonomic nervous system induces extreme increases in perceived pain that may be accompanied by swelling, temperature sensitivity, color fluctuations, and/or skin changes. CRPS most commonly affects the extremities but may sp [...]

Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Broccoli (Brassica oleracea) Stems, Leaves, and Florets: Optimization, Characterization, and Comparison with Maceration Extraction

Received: 17 February 2022;  Published: 01 April 2022;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2202011

Abstract

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) to obtain phenolics from vegetable wastes has been of recent interest. Broccoli is one of the most globally produced vegetables, and around 43% of the harvest is considered waste. Thus, given the significant quantity of broccoli waste generated, the objective of this work was to optimize the MAE, to maximize the total phenolic content (TPC) from broccoli by-products (leaves and stems) and broccoli florets. The Response Surface Analysis was used in the optimization model to evalua [...]

The Role of Fatigue in the Aging Swallow: A Review

Received: 29 October 2020;  Published: 15 April 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2102166

Abstract

Fatigue is a term commonly used to describe patient performance and/or subjective experience in the evaluation and management of swallowing disorders (known as dysphagia). There is an association between fatigue and aging, as well as fatigue and many dysphagia-causing diseases/disorders. Therefore, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are justifiably aware of and concerned about the potential impact of fatigue on swallowing performance and mealtime behavior. However, there is minimal agreement on and understanding o [...]

Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) is Feasible and Acceptable in Pre-conditioning and Post-operative Recovery of Patients after Total Knee arthroplasty (TKA): A Clinical Case Series

Received: 03 February 2022;  Published: 21 March 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2201012

Abstract

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for minimal to moderate Kellgren and Lawrence grade knee osteoarthritis has significant evidence for effectiveness. The effect of PBMT in severe grades of osteoarthritis is less clear; and no studies have investigated the effect of PBMT before and after knee replacement surgery. This small study (n=4) aimed to understand the potential feasibility of undertaking a future randomised controlled clinical trial of a self-administered, home-based light patch system before and after total [...]
