The Course of COVID: How the Pandemic Changed Art Therapy Practice

Received: 30 May 2023;  Published: 19 July 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2303029

Abstract

This study explored how the global COVID-19 pandemic changed the ways in which art therapists use art in their therapeutic practice. Art has repeatedly been linked to healing in a variety of settings, but generally art therapists have been accustomed to conducting therapy sessions in person. Prior to the pandemic most art therapists preferred in-person sessions for a variety of therapeutic reasons. Although there are clearly downsides to meeting remotely, there have been unforeseen advantages, as well. The present [...]

Deep Brain Stimulation – Therapeutic Possibilities in Alzheimer's Disease

Received: 02 December 2020;  Published: 30 April 2021;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2102170

Abstract

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide, and represents a significant cause of cognitive decline, disability, and mortality. Ongoing clinical trials continue to investigate β-amyloid targeted therapy with unclear benefit, and we are currently limited to symptomatic treatment. Therefore, there is a salient need for the development of novel, potentially disease-modifying therapeutic strategies such as deep brain stimulation. This manuscript reviews Deep Brain Stimulation in Alzheimer’s Dis [...]

Influences of Household Processing Methods on Nutritional Composition, Anti-nutritional Factors and Antioxidant Activities of Foxtail Millet

Received: 17 July 2023;  Published: 09 November 2023;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2304020

Abstract

The present investigation aims to study the influence of household processing methods, such as soaking, germination, and steam cooking, on nutritional composition (proximates, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins), antinutrient factors (phytochemicals: tannins, total phenols, phytic acid; enzyme inhibitors: trypsin and α-amylase inhibitors) and antioxidant properties of whole grains of foxtail millet. The contents of total ash (1.42%), fat (3.02 g/100 g), and mineral chromium (12.83 mg/100 g) were found to be [...]

Promoting Advance Care Planning for Persons with Dementia: Study Protocol for the LEAD (Life-Planning in Early Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias) Clinical Trial

Received: 01 September 2022;  Published: 06 January 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2301004

Abstract

Due to the insidious progression of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), surrogate decision-makers typically make medical and long-term-care decisions for a care recipient, most often a family care partner. Unfortunately, many care recipient/care partner dyads have failed to engage in advance care planning or have lost the opportunity to do so due to the cognitive decline of the care recipient. To address this need, our team created a validated dementia-focused advance care planning tool known as t [...]

How to Prioritize Voluntary Dietary Modification

Received: 03 August 2020;  Published: 25 December 2020;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2004005

Abstract

Environmentally motivated voluntary diet modifications are the focus of much research and public discourse. Yet the nuanced multi-faceted, multi-dimensional nature of agriculture-earth interactions, and limited public environmental knowledge likely combine to undermine the efficacy of environmentally motivated dietary shifts, squandering limited good will. To counter this, here I devise two related indices for crudely estimating importance of various environmental impacts of alternative dietary choices. Based on th [...]

Water Photo-Oxidation Reaction on Clean and Doped Two-Dimensional Graphitic C2N

Received: 16 February 2020;  Published: 20 April 2020;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2002003

Abstract

In the search for new efficient photo-catalysts for hydrogen production through water splitting, the main attention has been paid to tuning the band gap width and its position with respect to vacuum level. However, actual electro-catalytic activity for the water oxidation reaction on a catalyst surface is no less important than those quantities. In this work we evaluate from first principles the thermodynamics of the reaction on relatively new candidates for water splitting: two-dimensional C2N and that doped with [...]

Cost-Effective Biodiesel Synthesis from Waste Marble Powder as A Green Heterogeneous Catalyst Using Pongamia Pinnata Oil

Received: 08 December 2022;  Published: 13 March 2023;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2301013

Abstract

Waste marble powder (WMP) is Investigated for developing heterogeneous catalysts by calcination method and used in biodiesel synthesis by esterification-transesterification process from Pongamia Pinnata oil. Hammet indicators, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques were also studied for the characterization of developed catalyst from waste marble powder (WMP). The conversion of calcium carbonate to calcium oxide in marble powder was found at 800 [...]

Using Music to Manage Anxiety: A Mixed Methods Intervention Study Between Two Lockdowns

Received: 21 November 2022;  Published: 08 February 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2301013

Abstract

Lockdowns were a central strategy for managing the outbreak of COVID-19, and Melbourne, Australia had some of the most extensive restrictions globally during 2021. As a result, university students were faced with isolated living and challenging learning experiences. This pilot study occurred during 2021, close to both university assignment due dates and end of semester examinations and some of the longest lockdowns. Seventy-one participants responded to recruitment materials describing using music playlists to mana [...]

Conservation Prioritization of Ecologically Susceptible Zones at Disaggregated Levels

Received: 29 December 2021;  Published: 22 April 2022;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2202014

Abstract

Ecologically susceptible zones (ESZs) are endowed with the distinct bio, geo, climatic, hydrological, and ecological integrity that sustain natural resources to support the livelihood of dependent populations. However, globalization and consequent anthropogenic activities have led to the erosion of the natural resource base and enhanced the levels of pollutants, triggering global environmental change, evident from changes in the climate. Alterations in the structure and the ecological integrity of ESZs may lead to [...]

Non-Newtonian Flow in Bifurcated Piping and Arterial Networks

Received: 12 February 2022;  Published: 23 May 2022;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2202018

Abstract

Flows in multi-branch piping systems are modeled for linear Newtonian and nonlinear Power Law, Bingham Plastic and Herschel-Bulkley fluids. The nonlinear models are often used to describe multiphase fluids consisting of liquid and solid phases, including cement slurries and drilling muds in petroleum engineering. Rheological and heterogeneous multiphase effects are important to blood flows in single and bifurcated arteries, capillaries and veins – biological applications are also emphasized to highlight their incre [...]
