Promoting Workplace Mental Health for Hospital Social Workers Using Compassionate Mind Training

Received: 30 April 2024;  Published: 04 November 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2404064

Abstract

Hospital social workers commonly experience empathy fatigue and burnout at work. However, empathic distress can be reversed by cultivating compassion as a skill and learning how to turn empathy into compassion. This report explores how 60 staff used Compassion Mind Training (CMT) to promote workplace mental health for hospital social workers. It recommends building a workplace culture of compassion through CMT using various ways to reinforce individual and organizational commitments. This helps create a sense of p [...]

Exploring the Unidimensionality of the GAD-7 for South African First Responders: Evidence from Multiple Psychometric Approaches

Received: 21 September 2024;  Published: 27 January 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2501266

Abstract

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a prevalent mental health condition and the GAD-7 is widely used as a screening tool and measure of GAD severity. However, research has yielded conflicting findings regarding the factor structure of the instrument, with some studies supporting a unidimensional interpretation while others suggest a two-factor solution. These inconsistencies highlight the importance of validating the GAD-7 across diverse populations. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties and fact [...]

Unexplained Phenomena in Auricular Medicine

Received: 02 January 2024;  Published: 04 January 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2401003

Abstract

Auricular medicine, an integral component of traditional medicine, has grown famous as a complementary and alternative Medicine (CAM) modality. Despite its widespread acceptance and anecdotal support, the scientific community grapples with multifaceted challenges that impede the establishment of a comprehensive empirical foundation for auricular medicine. This editorial critically assesses the current scientific landscape, delineating unresolved issues and scientific lacunae that demand rigorous investigation.

Intensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for School Avoidance among Youth with Anxiety Disorders or OCD in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Received: 27 January 2025;  Published: 26 June 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2502028

Abstract

School avoidance is associated with a range of negative outcomes and has been increasing in youth in the past several decades. This study examined the efficacy of an intensive outpatient CBT program, for youth (N = 137, ages 8-19) with anxiety disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and compared both baseline symptoms and outcomes for youth with school avoidance compared to those without. At admission, results indicated that parents of children with school avoidance reported higher levels of family accommo [...]

A Randomized Control Trial of the Effects of a Hatha Yoga Program on Psychological Well-Being

Received: 11 March 2025;  Published: 23 September 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2503039

Abstract

Hatha yoga is a common style of yoga used for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual benefits, enhancing quality of life and well-being. The current study used a randomized control trial (RCT) to investigate whether completing an eight-week posture-based Hatha yoga program would lead to greater psychological benefits than taking part in an eight-week lecture series about the history and philosophy of yoga. Fifty-five participants (42 female, age range 18-32) completed five self-report measures both before and a [...]

Oleuropein can Protect the Brain Against Deleterious Effects of Bile Duct Ligation in Male Mice

Received: 26 December 2023;  Published: 23 April 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2402218

Abstract

Oleuropein (OP) is a phenolic compound in olives. OP possesses potent antioxidant activity and an extensive spectrum of other pharmacological properties, including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. This study investigated the effects of OP on neural injuries caused by bile duct ligation (BDL) in male mice. The mice were randomly allocated to three groups: sham, BDL, and BDL + OP. Neurobehavioral tests histological and biochemical evaluations were accomplished to assess cerebral damage. The [...]

Nanostructure-Based Solid-State Energy Storage through Hydrogen Trapping in Batteries Using Materials Modelling Technique

Received: 15 August 2024;  Published: 07 November 2024;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2404019

Abstract

A comprehensive investigation on hydrogen grabbing by SiO-GeO was carried out, including DFT computations at the CAM-B3LYP-D3/6-311+G (d,p) level of theory. The data shows that if silicon elements are replaced by germanium, the H-grabbing energy will be ameliorated. Electromagnetic and thermodynamic properties of SiO, GeO, and SiO-GeO nanoclusters have been evaluated. The hypothesis of the hydrogen adsorption phenomenon was confirmed by density distributions of PDOS and LOL for hydrated nanoclusters of H-SiO, H-GeO [...]

Attenuation of Blood Glucose by the Ketone Monoester (R)-3-betahydroxybutyrate Glyceride in Healthy Male Sprague Dawley Rats in Response to a Standard Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

Received: 31 January 2025;  Published: 25 July 2025;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2503014

Abstract

Efficient glucose uptake by peripheral tissue is important for individuals who desire to maintain optimal wellbeing. Various methods to regulate postprandial blood glucose have been reported in the research literature, however, few have examined the effect of ketone esters on blood glucose levels. The present study evaluated blood glucose following the administration of an oral glucose tolerance test, with and without ketone esters delivered at two different dosages, in a sample of healthy Sprague-Dawley rats. We h [...]

An Unusual Presentation of Pleural Effusion in an Elderly Woman Post-COVID-19 Infection: A Case Report

Received: 18 February 2025;  Published: 29 May 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2502313

Abstract

Pleural effusions are defined as accumulations of fluid in the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs. They are often secondary outcomes of underlying conditions, such as congestive heart failure, malignancy, or pneumonia. Acute cases of COVID-19 pneumonia have been linked to episodes of pleural effusion, but these cases are often rare. In this report, we analyze a case of pleural effusion in a 71-year-old female patient who had been declining after a recent COVID-19 infection and later died in the hospital. It is no [...]
