Responsible Implementation of Expanded Screening Programs for Genetic Diseases at the Beginning of Life

Received: 13 July 2017;  Published: 11 February 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.1801013

Abstract

Technology makes it possible to expand many of the current screening programs. Initiatives for preconception screening of carrier status of recessive diseases, prenatal screening of aneuploidies and neonatal screening were initially undertaken by targeting one or at most, a few, conditions. Tandem mass spectrometry and genomic technologies, such as sequencing and panel testing, make it possible to increase the scope of these programs to include more disorders or markers. While inclusion of a larger number of condit [...]

Production and Characterization of Carboxymethylcellulase by Submerged Fermentation of Moniliophthora perniciosa

Received: 24 December 2022;  Published: 12 June 2023;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2302019

Abstract

Microorganisms that are capable of degrading lignocellulolytic materials can produce extracellular cellulase complexes. Microorganisms are an excellent alternative for the production of cellulolytic complex, since these sources have a high power of multiplication. In this work, we researched the production by the fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa. The production and pH and temperature optimum optimization were studied by Response surface methodology and carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase) characterization. Thermal stabi [...]

Local Authority Waste Management Strategies, the Circular Economy and the Generation of Energy from Waste in England

Received: 17 February 2024;  Published: 01 April 2024;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2402009

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the approach to waste management of local authorities in England, to investigate their strategic objectives, and to ascertain to what extent sustainability and circular economy practices are in evidence in this context. A qualitative, inductive research method is used, based on an examination of secondary documentation in three local authorities in England in Birmingham, Bristol and Newcastle upon Tyne. The findings reveal considerable common ground within the three authori [...]

Use of Plasma-Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) in the Treatment of Acne

Received: 26 April 2024;  Published: 03 October 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2404225

Abstract

Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the pilosebaceous units of the skin, characterized by the formation of papules, cysts, comedones, pustules, nodules, and scars. These lesions are typically located on the face and shoulders, although they can extend to the trunk, arms, and legs. In regenerative medicine, biomolecules are fundamental to tissue regeneration. The use of growth factors from autologous platelet-rich plasma emerges as a promising alternative in the treatment of acne and scars. This study [...]

Management of Calcareous Corneal Degeneration from Medication Washout to Corneal Transplantation. Case Series and Review of the Literature

Received: 27 February 2024;  Published: 07 June 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2402218

Abstract

Calcareous corneal degeneration is a rare disease characterized by calcium phosphate deposition into the deep corneal layers. Corneal calcification has a multifactorial origin and is associated with various systemic and ocular conditions. Several treatment options showed promising results in the management of this disorder. Herein, two cases of calcareous degeneration occurring postoperatively in patients undergoing surgery for retinal detachment (case #1) and glaucoma (case #2) were reported. Despite normal serum [...]

Anxiety, Stress and Depression as the Notorious Barriers to Achieving a Massive Performance among Egyptian Construction Site Workers

Received: 25 August 2023;  Published: 24 November 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2304197

Abstract

In today's corporate landscape, optimizing performance has emerged as a formidable challenge for organizations, often hindered by formidable barriers and psychological factors. This study explores the role of anxiety, stress, and depression in attaining performance among Egyptian construction site workers. The quantitative analysis utilizes cross-sectional data collected from workers working at different construction sites in Egypt. The study concludes with findings from 298 valid cases. Leveraging the structur [...]

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Complex Interactions, Evaluations, and Management Decisions

Received: 31 January 2019;  Published: 28 June 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.hg.1902025

Abstract

Diseases of the liver are commonly encountered in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). While the differential for IBD patients with elevated liver associated enzymes is broad, it is similar to that of the general population. This differential includes including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common liver disease in North America. When initial work-up for elevated liver associated enzymes is negative and patients have steatosis on ultrasound, we counsel IBD patients aggressively about [...]

Potential of Nutritious Indian Medicinal Plants to Boost Immunity in the Aftermath of Pandemics: A SWOC Analysis

Received: 23 August 2023;  Published: 26 March 2024;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2401004

Abstract

The world has suffered a lot during the COVID-19 pandemic, for which nobody was prepared. Due to the lack of appropriate treatment, Indian medicinal plants have alleviated the burden due to their diverse health benefits. It has been observed that certain medicinal plants can effectively enhance immunity against microorganisms and viruses. Numerous scientific studies have supported the above claims. This paper presents the SWOC analysis of Indian medicinal plants for their immunity-enhancing effects so that the medi [...]

Variations in Secondary Health Resource Utilization Post Clozapine Initiation

Received: 10 September 2020;  Published: 26 November 2020;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2004078

Abstract

This study looked at secondary care utilization metrics as an effectiveness indicator of Clozapine initiation in 77 patients over the following year compared to the year prior to initiation. It was found that there was a marginal drop in psychiatric bed utilization, alongside reduced crisis team use. Medical and psychiatric outpatient use increased, as did physical health interventions. Overall, compared with costs over the year preceding Clozapine initiation, an estimated saving per patient of £3,867 (5,065) was a [...]
