Enhancing the Wettability of Polyetheretherketone (Peek) Membrane with Ozone for Improving Fuel Cell Performance

Received: 21 August 2022;  Published: 06 December 2022;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2204040

Abstract

Ozone was reacted with the aromatic membrane polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to form oxidized functional groups on the surface to enhance the attraction and transport of protons in fuel cells. Ozonation of unsaturated C-C sp2 bonds in PEEK formed a primary ozonide which dissociated to primarily produce O=C-O/O=C-OH moieties, and the root mean squared roughness factor (Rq) decreased from 7.4 nm, for the untreated sample, down to 3.1 nm. The oxidation of the surface and decrease in surface roughness made the surface incr [...]

Anti-Violence Centers in Italy During the COVID-19 Emergency: Support Strategies for Women Victims of Violence

Received: 16 August 2022;  Published: 30 November 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2204147

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted anti-violence centers for women. This study aims to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions affect: the assistance and protection functions of the anti-violence centers; the needs of women victims of violence; and the well-being of the professionals working with these women. Twenty-four Italian anti-violence centers were involved, and 29 women working there were interviewed. From the qualitative analysis of the texts, three main themes were identified regardi [...]

Local Authority Waste Management Strategies, the Circular Economy and the Generation of Energy from Waste in England

Received: 17 February 2024;  Published: 01 April 2024;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2402009

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the approach to waste management of local authorities in England, to investigate their strategic objectives, and to ascertain to what extent sustainability and circular economy practices are in evidence in this context. A qualitative, inductive research method is used, based on an examination of secondary documentation in three local authorities in England in Birmingham, Bristol and Newcastle upon Tyne. The findings reveal considerable common ground within the three authori [...]

Household Exposure to Secondhand Cigarette Smoke during Pregnancy and Adverse Offspring Health Outcomes in The Gambia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Received: 31 August 2024;  Published: 08 April 2025;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2502006

Abstract

The adverse effects of maternal passive smoking during pregnancy on offspring health remain understudied in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in The Gambia, where smoke-free regulations are limited. To determine the prevalence of maternal passive smoking (MPS) during pregnancy and investigate its associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes and offspring health complications in The Gambia. A cross-sectional study was conducted in February 2023 among 401 mothers with children under 5 years in urban and rural regions [...]

Impacts of Different Sources of Carbonates on Growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici in Different Growth Media

Received: 18 November 2022;  Published: 13 November 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2304049

Abstract

Fusarium is the most common soil-borne pathogen that causes wilt in many plant crops, among which the tomato is one of the most susceptible crops. This experiment is conducted to analyse the impacts of inorganic carbon compounds i.e., calcium carbonate CaCO3, sodium carbonate Na2CO3 and potassium bicarbonate KHCO3 on the growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) causing wilt in tomato plant in different culture media including Malt Extract Agar (MEA), Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and V8. Three concentrati [...]

Examining the Role Between Social Antecedents and Depression among LGBTQ+ Older Adults Eligible for Low-Income Housing

Received: 28 July 2023;  Published: 15 December 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2304261

Abstract

Housing is one of the top four most needed services for LGBTQ+ older adults, and this study focuses on the intersection of depression and social antecedents among LGBTQ+ older adults eligible for low-income housing. To explore social antecedents (i.e., demographics, early events, later events, social integration, and stressors) associated with screening positive for depression among low-income LGBTQ+ older adults from two cities in the Western United States. A cross-sectional study was conducted with LGBTQ+ older a [...]

Leveraging Existing Abilities in Dementia (LEAD™): Changing the Way Rehabilitation Professionals Care for Persons Living with Dementia

Received: 08 December 2023;  Published: 03 April 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2402275

Abstract

Latest estimates indicate that 5-7% of the population are living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias worldwide with a doubling in incidence expected every 20 years. Rehabilitation professionals are challenged with the complex needs of these patients. It is commonly thought that patients with dementia do not benefit from rehabilitation because of cognitive decline, behaviors, lack of communication, or difficulties in learning; however, current literature indicates this is not accurate. With proper knowled [...]

Some Aspects of Marine Meteorology and Air-Sea-Wetland-River Interactions During Hurricane Ida (2021)

Received: 28 August 2022;  Published: 21 October 2022;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2204042

Abstract

In August 2021 Hurricane Ida devastated southeast Louisiana. On the basis of numerous pertinent meteorological-oceanographic (met-ocean) information including datasets and graphics as supplied by various public agencies, several unique topics related to marine meteorology and air-sea-land interactions are investigated. It is found that a newly proposed revised relation between minimum sea-level pressure and maximum sustained wind speed is verified during Ida. Characteristics of the rapid intensification, defined as [...]

Relationship between the Severity of Chest CT Scan Lesions, Arterial Oxygenation and Inflammatory Markers in High – Altitude Patients with Covid-19

Received: 01 December 2022;  Published: 19 April 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2302180

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between the severity of lung tomographic compromise with arterial oxygenation and inflammatory markers in patients with COVID-19, and to evaluate the relationship between the CTSS tomographic severity score and the mortality risk in a high-altitude population. A retrospective, longitudinal study reviewed medical records between January and July of 2021 at the Daniel Alcides Carrión Regional Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital in Huancayo. Categorical variables were anal [...]
