How to Heal the Healer: Combating Burnout Using Compassion and Mindfulness-Based Interventions

Received: 13 June 2019;  Published: 24 July 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.1903047

Abstract

We explore how medical culture contributes to burnout. Highlighting specific programs aimed at developing compassion and mindfulness skills, we share our own perspectives and experiences implementing similarly focused programs. Promising results on the application of compassion-based programs show evidence of improvements to a number of measures of trainee wellbeing, particularly among the most vulnerable trainees, while results pertaining to mindfulness programs show improvements to performance as well [1, 2]. As [...]

Molecular and in Silico Analysis of MEFV Variants in Familial Mediterranean Fever Patients in Southwest Iran

Received: 11 October 2022;  Published: 12 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2302181

Abstract

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is classified as an autoinflammatory genetic disease inherited by mutations in MEFV. These mutations can affect the dysregulation of inflammatory processes in the human body and lead to fever and pain in the chest and abdomen. Many known missense mutations in MEFV are linked to FMF disease. Mutations in MEFV in most cases are located on the short arm of chromosome 16 and can impair the function of the pyrin protein. In this research, we aimed to examine the entire exons of MEFV fo [...]

The Impact of Intergenerational Support on the Elderly’s Life Satisfaction in China: A Comparison of Males and Females1

Received: 11 March 2024;  Published: 23 August 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2403285

Abstract

This paper examines whether different types of intergenerational support have different effects on life satisfaction among the elderly, and whether a gender difference exists in the effect of intergenerational support on the elderly’s life satisfaction. Data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) were used for this study. The study sample consisted of 10,801 cases. A logit regression model was used for empirical verification. All types of intergenerational support were found to have effects on life [...]

Bioactive Properties of Sorghum-based Beverages from Whole or Refined Grains

Received: 08 May 2023;  Published: 22 August 2023;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2303013

Abstract

Sorghum-based beverages were developed and the effects of decortication on nutritional composition and biofunctional properties after a simulated gastrointestinal digestion were analyzed. For that, white sorghum flours from whole (WS) and decorticated (DS) grains were obtained and used to prepare sorghum beverages. They were analyzed regarding chemical composition, minerals, and phenolic acid contents. Moreover, the bioaccessibility of phenolics, proteins, and the potential bioactivity (ABTS+ scavenging, ACE-I inhi [...]

The Jacobs Syndrome: Clinical Case

Received: 15 October 2023;  Published: 28 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2401218

Abstract

This work describes a clinical case of a violation of sex formation in a newborn child with Y-chromosome dysomy. The diagnostic challenges related to Y-chromosome variability and associated anomalies in sex development are being considered. The work presents clinical and laboratory data for Y-chromosome dysomy. It is noted that the challenge in diagnosing disorders of sex development is associated with the polymorphic clinical manifestations of this syndrome. It is noted that the presence of Y-chromosome dysomy is [...]

Immunoprotective Encapsulation of Micro-Organs

Received: 07 May 2019;  Published: 14 August 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.1903078

Abstract

Background: Cell encapsulation technology is most likely the ultimate solution for cell therapy based clinical approaches. A key issue when developing a functional encapsulated construct is to consider not only the nature of the capsule but also how the cells should be incorporated into the capsule in order to minimally compromise their function. Methods: We have developed a tissue engineering approach, composed of decellularized micro scaffolds and various types of cells in which fully functional "Engineered Micro [...]

Compassion in Medical Practice

Received: 25 April 2019;  Published: 08 July 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.1903044

Abstract

Compassion and kindness can be cultivated and enhanced. Over the years in medical practice I have witnessed many healthcare workers, after having worked with kind and caring practitioners, become progressively more humane. Those of us who are teachers need to be mindful of that. In educating new physicians, compassion should play a central role and we as practicing doctors are well placed to model a caring and empathetic approach to our patients. There is also a fundamental need to look after ourselves and main [...]

Assisted Phytostabilization of Acidic Polymetallic Mine Tailings Using Marble Waste and Native Plant Citrullus colocynthis: Effect on Soil, Plant, and Metal Uptake

Received: 29 December 2020;  Published: 22 July 2021;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2103030

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the phytostabilization ability of the native Moroccan plant Citrullus colocynthis on the neutralization of soil acidity and stabilization of metallic trace elements (MTEs) assisted by marble waste. Mine tailings (MT) collected from an abandoned polymetallic site were mixed with powdered marble (PM) using different mixing ratios (%): (MTPM25), (MTPM50), (MTPM75), and agricultural soil (AS) acting as the control. Seeds of C. colocynthis were selected and planted under g [...]

The Treatment of the Nervous System with Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Received: 25 February 2019;  Published: 27 February 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.1901014

Abstract

The nervous system is everywhere in the body, especially in the skin. Ancient Chinese acupuncture charts show us that the nerves are all connected and can work together to promote health. This connection occurs through the brain and brain stem. It is clear that acupuncture is analgesic by inhibition of transient receptor potential cation channels in the skin [1]. The role of chemokines in pain is becoming understood. Chemokines promote pain in the skin and activate ascending neural pathways that regulate chemo [...]

Short-Term Impact of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Leukemia Patients on Bone Bio Markers, Electrolytes and Blood Profile

Received: 30 September 2022;  Published: 25 April 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2302183

Abstract

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) has significantly improved the survival rates of patients suffering from hematological malignancies. However, the cure can only be achieved at the price of morbidity and long-term complications such as bone diseases leading to fractures and osteopenia. Several studies have reported the impact of organ transplants on bone metabolism, electrolytes and blood profile. This prospective observational clinical study aims at elucidating the [...]
