Biocompatibility and Surface Integrity of Zirconia Ceramics Treated by Laser-plasma Driven Shock-waves

Received: 10 April 2022;  Published: 22 November 2022;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2204025

Abstract

This is a multi-disciplinary paper focused on the preliminary results of deploying laser shock treatment (LST) to ZrO2 ceramics. This work has significance in several industrial sectors for components that will benefit from strengthening. These components are, namely: dental implants; cutting and drawing tools; valves, bearings, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and high-performance scissors and knives, where modification of hard, brittle materials properties such as that of a ZrO2, can yield a performance boost. T [...]

Removal of As(III) from Water by Cellulase Templated TiO2: A Photocatalytic Oxidation Conjugated Adsorption Process

Received: 16 July 2022;  Published: 09 September 2022;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2203025

Abstract

TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared using cellulase as a biotemplate through a hydrothermal process. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized based on physicochemical techniques and was used to remove As(III) from contaminated water. The cellulase templated TiO2 photocatalyst (TiO2-cellulase) had a large specific surface area, which reached 166.6 m2·g–1. It also had a strong oxidation ability and, thus, behaved well in both photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) and dark adsorption. The pH of the solution h [...]

Relationship between Hearing Loss Risk Factors and Hearing Screening Results in Newborns: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study

Received: 02 January 2023;  Published: 29 June 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2302184

Abstract

Congenital hearing loss can have a long-term impact on children’s speech and communication abilities. Early detection and intervention of hearing loss are important in newborns. It is well known that there are several risk factors for hearing loss; however, the relationship between these risk factors and hearing screening tests remains uncertain in Iran. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between hearing loss risk factors and Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) and Transient-Evok [...]

Effective Photogeneration of Singlet Oxygen and High Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Activities of Porous Mn-Doped ZnO-ZrO2 Nanocomposites

Received: 06 April 2024;  Published: 03 July 2024;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2403008

Abstract

Disperse porous Mn-doped ZnO-ZrO2 nanocomposites were prepared using the facile polymer-salt method. The effect of Mn content on the crystal structure, composite morphologies, their ability to photogenate the singlet oxygen, luminescence properties, and bactericidal activities were studied. The crystal structure and morphology of these materials were investigated using XRD and SEM analysis. It was found that obtained nanocomposites consist of small (~9 nm) hexagonal ZnO and fine ZrO2 crystals and the embedding of M [...]

Incentivizing Alternative Fuel Vehicle Transactions: Analysis of Cash-for-Clunkers Transactions for New Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Received: 14 January 2022;  Published: 02 August 2022;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2203026

Abstract

Monetary incentives to accelerate the transition of private vehicle fleets to zero emissions promote sustainability in the transportation sector. Clean Cars for America to incentivize transactions for new battery power vehicles is a program in furtherance of sustainable transportation goals in the United States. Unfortunately, data on transactions for new alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) are scarce so empirical research to explore the costs and/or the benefits of such programs is also scarce. Analysis of transactio [...]

A Comprehensive in Silico Analysis of the Functional and Structural Consequences of the Deleterious Missense Nonsynonymous SNPs in Human GABRA6 Gene

Received: 20 December 2023;  Published: 15 April 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2402227

Abstract

Epilepsy, a prevalent neurological disorder, affects more than 50 million individuals worldwide and is characterized by recurring seizures. Nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) found within coding regions of epilepsy-related genes are believed to have significant impacts on protein function. This is due to their tendency to cause mutations in the encoded amino acids, which can subsequently lead to pathogenic alterations in protein structure and function. Consequently, nsSNPs have the potential to [...]

Young Adult’s Mental Health Literacy in Relation to Depression and Their Attitudes Towards Complementary Medicine Practice

Received: 11 July 2022;  Published: 09 October 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2204047

Abstract

Depression and mental health-related issues are increasingly prevalent in young adolescents and adults and so is the use of Complementary Therapies (CTs) to treat depression. Systematic reviews have found that, of all CTs, acupuncture, exercise, and the herbal remedy St John’s Wort have the greatest amount of evidence for efficacy in treating depression. We aimed to assess Mental Health Literacy (MHL) levels in the treatment of depression and Complementary Therapy’s (CT) usage in adolescents and adults. Surveys wer [...]

Arginine and Histidine-modified Layered Double Hydroxides Facilitate Transgene Expression in Cancer Cells in Vitro

Received: 14 June 2023;  Published: 21 September 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2303193

Abstract

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have interesting properties and structures that enable them to carry nucleic acids, such as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). This study synthesized LDHs using the co-precipitation method and functionalized with the amino acids arginine (Arg) and histidine (His) to promote proton-sponge activity for enhanced transgene expression. The LDHs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). The interaction of [...]

Farmer Stress & Coping: Qualitative Study from Hawaiʻi

Received: 18 June 2024;  Published: 23 December 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2404070

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the mental health challenges faced by Hawaiʻi farmers and allied agricultural producers, focusing on the main stressors they encountered and the coping mechanisms they employed. Through interviews with 77 farmers across all four counties, data revealed that significant stressors for Hawaiʻi farmers were legislative and policy issues, financial and economic concerns, as well as pests and diseases. Farmers employed various coping strategies to mitigate stress, primarily along the lines [...]
