Received: 23 August 2023;  Published: 20 December 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2304061

Abstract

Self-compassion involves being touched by and open to one's own suffering, coupled with the desire to alleviate it and heal oneself with kindness. While self-compassion has gained significant attention in research, certain conceptual and methodological complexities have evolved over time and led to ambiguity surrounding the concept. As such, the overall purpose of this commentary was to highlight and discuss the different perspectives of self-compassion in the literature. We opted to centralize our focus primarily [...]

Effect of Recycled Rubber Particles on the Deicing Salt-Scaling Durability of Concrete

Received: 27 March 2021;  Published: 09 August 2021;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2103033

Abstract

The present study investigated the effect of reused rubber particles (RRP) on the deicer salt durability of ordinary concrete. Four mixtures were designed, a control concrete (CC) and three other rubber concretes obtained by partial substitution of natural dune sand aggregate with reused rubber particles with 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% w/w. All studied concretes were subjected to the combined effect of freeze/thaw (56 and 120) cycles with the deicer salt solution of 3% NaCl. The results indicated that RRP improved the deic [...]

Substance Use Disorder, Alexithymia, and Personality Disorders, What is the Link? Pilot African Study

Received: 17 January 2023;  Published: 04 August 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2303176

Abstract

Alexithymia and personality disorders are common in substance use (SUD) patients. This association remains understudied and is considered to hurt the course and management of substance use disorder patients. To determine the prevalence of personality disorders (PD) and alexithymia in addiction care patients. Besides, we targeted investigating a possible link between alexithymia, different personality disorders and clinical aspects of substance use disorder including severity. This cross-sectional study was conducte [...]

Women’s Perceptions of the Embodied Experience of Osteoporosis across the Lifecourse

Received: 29 October 2019;  Published: 12 December 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.1904093

Abstract

Beliefs about the daily experience of a disease are used to identify risk and motivate participation in prevention. For osteoporosis, a disease that is affected by health behaviours throughout the lifecourse, individual perceptions of the disease can affect health decisions and future disease prevalence. Understanding how the experience of osteoporosis is perceived by women at different stages of life can illuminate factors that influence engagement in prevention. Women representing three life stages - young adults [...]

Community Empowerment in Peri-Urban Areas through Solar Technologies: A Case Study in Central Mexico

Received: 02 September 2024;  Published: 07 February 2025;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2501010

Abstract

This article explores a strategy to empower vulnerable communities by transferring solar technology as a path to energy justice development. The proposed methodology is based on preliminary research on energy uses according to the needs, practices, and customs of the communities. The study focuses on the cases of three women with productive vocations based on entrepreneurship in different phases of incubation found in a peri-urban community in central Mexico. In this community, productive energy uses include a) the [...]

Urban Air Pollution and Emergency Department Visits for Cardiac and Respiratory Diseases

Received: 18 September 2021;  Published: 11 February 2022;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2201005

Abstract

Air pollution affects various aspects of human health. Here, the associations between the number of emergency department visits for circulatory and respiratory problems and ambient air pollution in Toronto, Canada, in the period between April 2004 and December 2015 were studied. The health data were linked with urban air pollution data and weather factors. The conditional Poisson regression models were built for 18 strata (sex, age group, season), 8 exposure factors (air pollutants, indexes), and their 15 lags (0-1 [...]

Integrative Cancer Therapy with Special Focus on Add-On Homeopathy: The Experience at Lienz Hospital

Received: 02 March 2018;  Published: 25 April 2019;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.1902027

Abstract

The first part of this position paper focuses on the debate about the scientific status of homeopathy and presents some answers. The scientific debate however, does not represent the available scientific evidence, which actually supports our limited data. Thus, it seems important and we aim to present how homeopathy can be part of an integrated concept in cancer care and how this is approved by randomized controlled trials. We present some arguments which were helpful to us in the discussion with oncologists that d [...]

Micronucleus-Centromere Assay to Measure Ionizing Radiation Damage of Low Dose Occupational Exposure

Received: 14 August 2018;  Published: 22 October 2018;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.1804043

Abstract

Background: The purpose of study was to assess the cytogenetic effect of chronic low dose radiation exposure of nuclear power plant workers using the micronucleus centromere assay. This method allows the differentiation between centromere-positive micronuclei containing whole chromosome and centromere-negative micronuclei containing acentric fragment pointing to clastogenic action of ionizing radiation. Methods: The effect of low dose occupational exposure was estimated in 32 nuclear power plant workers using in si [...]

Abstract

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a prevalent child and adolescent psychiatric condition characterized by substantial functional impairments. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has emerged as the primary therapeutic approach for managing mild to moderate cases of OCD in children and adolescents. Significant advancements have been made in applying CBT specifically to this age group in the past decade.
