A Review of Clinical Influencing Factors in the Selection of Cardiac Medications in the Elderly

Received: 14 January 2023;  Published: 31 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2302023

Abstract

Aging is a stage of the natural life cycle. It is a set of natural and coordinated growth changes all organs and body systems undergo to burnout. It is impossible to determine the exact time of old age for two reasons. First, the aging process is different for humans due to individual, hereditary factors. Second, aging has a set of physiological, psychological and, social factors. This review aimed to gather appropriate clinical information and facts for clinicians when practicing heart medications in elderly patie [...]

Synthesis and Characterization of MCM-41 Nanomaterials Containing Titanium and Application for Catalytic Oxidation of BTEX

Received: 17 August 2022;  Published: 30 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2302017

Abstract

The TiO2/MCM-41 nanomaterials were synthesized by impregnation with an excess solvent with different percentages of titanium dioxide. They were used for catalytic degradation of Benzene Toluene Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide in aqueous media. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray Diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption using the BET method and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The nanostructured phase of the hexagonal ordered materials was obtained even [...]

Is Electrocatheter-Mediated High-Voltage Pulsed Radiofrequency of the Dorsal Root Ganglion an Effective Adjuvant to Epidural Adhesiolysis in the Treatment of Chronic Lumbosacral Radicular Pain? A Retrospective Analysis

Received: 19 November 2022;  Published: 29 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2302171

Abstract

This study aims to determine if high-voltage PRF could effectively adjunct epidural adhesiolysis (EA) in treating patients with chronic lumbosacral radiating pain (LSRP) and neuropathic characteristics. A total of 409 patients suffering from a single leg-radiating pain lasting for > six months and unresponsive to previous treatments were divided into three different groups: Group 1 consisted of 227 patients suffering from LSRP in lumbar stenosis, 84 treated with EA alone and 143 with PRF-EA; group 2 consisted of [...]

Towards Femtoscan-Assisted Analysis of Liquid Crystal Self-Organization on Different Polymer and Glass Surfaces for Lab-on-a-Chip and Lab-on-a-Dish Applications, Including Optofluidic and Flexoelectric Ones

Received: 27 December 2022;  Published: 29 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2302022

Abstract

In this paper, starting with an introductory review of the applications of liquid crystals and polymer-dispersed liquid crystal systems in (bio)sensors and microfluidics, the possibilities of visualizing self-organization products of liquid crystalline media or field-induced instabilities of liquid crystalline systems are considered. In particular illustrated cases, it is proposed to use FemtoScan software-containing metrological complexes to visualize instabilities in liquid crystalline systems and products of sel [...]

The Global Malnutrition Composite Score Quality Measure-Seize this Opportunity to Benefit Older Adult Care and Health Equity!

Received: 27 February 2023;  Published: 25 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2302237

Abstract

In August 2022, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) adopted its first-ever nutrition electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM), known as the Global Malnutrition Composite Score (GMCS) as part of the Inpatient Hospital Quality Reporting (IQR) Program. Starting in January 2024, hospitals can self-select to include the GMCS as one of three optional eCQMs for reporting. This article focuses on the importance of addressing malnutrition to improve the overall health of the aging population, reduce preve [...]

Implementation of a Whole-School Mindfulness Curriculum in an Urban Elementary School: Tier 1 through Tier 3

Received: 27 November 2022;  Published: 24 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2302022

Abstract

Mindful education (ME) in schools can address student well-being and stressors, as well as improve the overall school environment. Implementing a whole-school mindfulness curriculum can be challenging, especially when serving students in both general education and emotional behavioral disorder (EBD) settings. We investigated the feasibility, implementation, and benefits of a whole-school mindfulness curriculum (MindUP) in an urban elementary school. This study is unique in that it investigated how to implement mind [...]

Avoiding a Grim Future: The Climate Crisis and Its Effects on Human Aggression and Violence

Received: 30 August 2022;  Published: 24 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2302034

Abstract

As the climate crisis has progressed, scientists have begun to ask, "How does a rapidly warming ecosystem impact human behavior?" As aggression scholars and non-professional environmentalists, it has become increasingly clear that the impact of the climate crisis, without intervention, will dramatically increase humans' exposure to risk factors known to cause aggressive and violent behavior. This article describes a model that explains the indirect and direct effects of the climate crisis on aggression and violence [...]

Adsorption of Phosphate by Synthesized Silver/Calcium Oxide-Activated Carbon Nanocomposite

Received: 24 February 2023;  Published: 24 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2302033

Abstract

Developing adsorbents with appreciable morphology will create new approaches for better phosphate adsorption performance. This study aims to investigate the design of an adsorbent by impregnating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto calcium oxide-activated carbon (CaO-AC). The Ag/CaO-AC nanocomposite was used as an adsorbent to remove phosphate. Batch adsorption studies were performed to evaluate the effects of adsorbent dose, initial phosphate concentration, contact time, and pH on removing phosphate from an aqueous [...]

Successful Kidney Transplantation of Two Patients with Donors Positive for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Infection

Received: 09 January 2023;  Published: 23 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2302185

Abstract

Despite preventative measures, including vaccination, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection may result in severe illness, particularly in immunosuppressed transplant recipients. This has had a negative impact on organ donation and transplantation rates. However, the risk of transmission from SARS-CoV-2 positive donors to kidney transplant recipients is unknown. We describe 2 cases of successful kidney transplantation from SARS-CoV-2 positive donors. Case 1: 38-year old unvaccinated fe [...]

Headache Frequency and Pain Severity Following a Nerve Stimulator Implant for Chronic Migraine: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Received: 14 November 2022;  Published: 23 May 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2302170

Abstract

Migraines affect approximately one billion individuals worldwide. Implanted nerve stimulator devices can provide relief to some individuals who have chronic migraines refractory to other treatments. This study defines the change in headache pain severity and headache frequency following implanted nerve stimulator treatment in chronic migraineurs. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review of six databases was performed to identify all clinical trials treating at least 10 chronic migraineurs with an implanted nerve stimul [...]
