About This Topic
Proton-conducting ceramic cells (PCCs), including protonic ceramic fuel cells and protonic ceramic electrolysis cells, are emerging as highly efficient platforms for clean energy conversion, hydrogen production, and chemical synthesis at intermediate operating temperatures. The development of next-generation electrocatalysts and electrode architectures is crucial for overcoming key challenges related to catalytic activity, electrode polarization, chemical stability, durability, and interfacial compatibility. Advances in mixed protonic–electronic conducting materials, nanostructured electrodes, composite catalysts, exsolution-based systems, and novel fabrication strategies are opening new pathways toward high-performance and durable ceramic electrochemical devices. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent progress in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of advanced electrocatalysts and electrodes for proton-conducting ceramic cells and electrolysis. Contributions addressing fundamental mechanisms, innovative materials, electrode engineering, degradation phenomena, and device-level performance are particularly encouraged, with the goal of accelerating the development of efficient and scalable technologies for sustainable hydrogen and energy conversion.
