Nonlinear Optimal Control for a PMLSG-VSC Wave Energy Conversion Unit

Received: 16 September 2023;  Published: 21 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2401006

Abstract

This article aims to treat the nonlinear control problem for the complex dynamics of a wave energy unit (WEC) that consists of a Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Generator (PMLSG) and a Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The article has developed a globally stable nonlinear optimal control method for this wave power generation unit. The new method avoids complicated state-space model transformations and minimizes the energy dispersion by the control loop. A novel nonlinear optimal control method is proposed for the [...]

Self-Healing Concrete Techniques and Technologies and Applications

Received: 30 April 2023;  Published: 21 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/rpm.2401006

Abstract

The main weakest point of concrete is its exposure to cracks, and concrete structure repair is expensive, especially for infrastructure maintenance, which is difficult to access. The ability of self-healing concrete (SHC) to successfully heal fractures without the assistance of humans has received much attention since it increases operational life and lowers maintenance expenses. This paper reviews various techniques and technologies of autogenous and autonomous self-healing concrete. Much more attention is given t [...]

Artocarpus Communis Seed Regulates P53, IRS, HsD17β2, FTO, and CYP11a Genes in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Rats

Received: 20 November 2023;  Published: 20 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2401213

Abstract

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine illness that affects 5-10% of reproductive women globally. It is a multifaceted hormonal disorder characterized by the involvement of numerous molecular mechanisms that contribute to its development. This study investigates the effect of Artocarpus communis seed on the hormonal imbalance and P53, IRS, HsD17β2, FTO, and CYP11a genes expression in the ovaries of letrozole-induced polycystic ovarian syndrome rats. To induce PCOS in 30 female Wistar rats, [...]

Chronic Lung Allograft Dysfunction, a Review in 2023

Received: 25 May 2023;  Published: 20 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.transplant.2401207

Abstract

Chronic allograft dysfunction (CLAD) is one of the leading causes of death after lung transplantation [1]. CLAD is a progressive and irreversible decline in lung function after transplant, manifested as an obstructive, restrictive, or mixed ventilatory impairment without any identifiable etiology as infection or acute rejection. Multiple risk factors have been associated with this condition. Despite its significant effect on the mortality of transplanted patients, there is still a lack of powerfully effective thera [...]

Good or Great: Which One Are You?

Received: 17 December 2023;  Published: 19 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2401269

Abstract

Clinicians caring for patients, especially those with chronic diseases or older adults, need to recognize the value of being able to transition away from aggressive care when appropriate and focus on a more palliative approach. Research has shown that patients want to have goals of care discussions and maintain autonomy at the end of life. These goals of care discussions can be challenging, and clinicians must prioritize and develop this skill in order to provide their patients with what they may need most. Being a [...]

Erectile Function in Men during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Received: 25 August 2023;  Published: 18 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.icm.2401014

Abstract

This research focused on two age groups of men (under 40 and over 40 years) and their sexual function during the COVID-19 pandemic. Somatic examinations, including the measurement of hormone levels, were conducted on all patients. The subjects also completed two questionnaires and provided personal history data. The first questionnaire covered the evaluation of erectile function, while the second assessed psychosocial trauma and stress. The results in the first group (men under 40 years of age) showed a correlation [...]

Examining the Carbon Management Strategies of Diebold Nixdorf

Received: 28 July 2023;  Published: 17 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2401007

Abstract

Carbon management is imperative to curb global temperature increases and mitigating climate change impacts. This report explores the carbon management strategies employed by Diebold Nixdorf, a multinational financial and retail technology company. As of 2021, the company has not established specific reduction targets and has not committed to achieving net zero emissions. The company employs diverse carbon reduction strategies, such as carbon offsetting, solar energy, and fleet improvements, with notable projects li [...]

The Role of Cognition in Balance Control

Received: 14 September 2023;  Published: 17 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2401211

Abstract

Balance is the ability to move and/or preserve a particular position while not falling under external force. Human balance is a complex process of integration and coordination of the sensory, motor, and biomechanical components, which is influenced by intrinsic and exogenous factors. One inherent factor that is hypothesized to have an impact on balance is cognition. However, studies about cognition's role in balance control are still limited, and study literature is needed to gain a better understanding. Cognition [...]

Mental Health among the Elderly in Nepal: Special Emphasis on Depression

Received: 21 December 2023;  Published: 08 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2401268

Abstract

This paper discusses the impact of Depression on the aging population. It also tries to explore the psychosocial risk factors and burden associated with geriatric depression in low-and-middle-income (LAMI) countries. Nepal, a South Asian developing country, is resource-poor and research-naïve. Research, in general, and mental health studies, in particular, are the least prioritized in this country. The lack of culturally adapted psychiatric inventories is one of the possible reasons for the low number of mental hea [...]

Floating Oscillating Water Column Wave Energy Converters: A Review of Developments

Received: 09 December 2023;  Published: 07 February 2024;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2401005

Abstract

The main challenge in designing offshore renewable energy structures is to ensure their structural integrity on a life cycle basis while operating in harsh environments and, in parallel, being financially competitive and environmentally friendly concerning other types of energy systems. The Oscillating Water Column (OWC) converters are among the first energy converters to be developed and deployed into the sea due to their relative simplicity of operation and relatively small number of moving parts. This review pro [...]
