Normal and Aberrant Muscle Tissue Healing, Learning from Health and Disease

Received: 28 March 2023;  Published: 19 September 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2303192

Abstract

Human skeletal muscle exhibits remarkable plasticity, being responsive to chemical, mechanical, metabolic, and inflammatory stress. When the homeostatic disturbance is below a threshold of significant damage, the muscle responds by modifying metabolic activity, cell size/shape, and structure, thereby normalizing cellular function. If the disturbance causes significant damage, skeletal muscle, along with a precisely choreographed response from the immune system, can regenerate. Very few pathological conditions inhib [...]

Carnauba Straw as Feedstock for Solid Biofuel Production

Received: 29 March 2023;  Published: 09 August 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2303043

Abstract

Carnauba straw (Copernicia prunifera), residual biomass derived from wax extraction, was evaluated as a potential feedstock for bioenergy production. The characterization was carried out using elemental analysis, proximate analysis, Higher Heating Value (HHV), FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, and FRX. The carbonization, using a Muffle Furnace, was applied as a thermal conversion technique to improve the fixed carbon content, and preliminary densification was done to assess the potential for future production of briquettes. [...]

Effect of Microwave Radiation on the Development of a Porous Aluminum Carrier of the Active Mass of Catalysts in Heterogeneous Catalytic Reactions

Received: 24 June 2022;  Published: 26 September 2022;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2203030

Abstract

In this study, we prepared a fine-grained, aluminum-reinforced alumina support matrix of the active mass of catalysts, which showed activity in heterogeneous catalytic reactions stimulated by electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range. The support absorbed microwave radiation of 2.45 GHz. We compared the textural characteristics of samples of Al/Al2O3 supports obtained by conventional heat treatment to those synthesized by heat treatment in a microwave field. We found several advantages of heat treating poten [...]

Comparative Analysis of Healthcare Waste Legislation: Alignment and Discrepancies between Federal, State, and Municipal Regulations

Received: 02 July 2025;  Published: 11 November 2025;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2504031

Abstract

The management of healthcare waste (HCW) presents a significant environmental and public health challenge, aggravated by gaps in current Brazilian federal regulations. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of specific state and municipal legislation on HCW, comparing it with ANVISA Resolution No. 222/2018 and CONAMA Resolution No. 358/2005 to ascertain whether local regulations enhance management practices and can act as supplementary instruments to federal guidelines. The methodology was structured into thr [...]

A Retrospective Study of Progressive Gait Impairment in Alzheimer’s Disease

Received: 27 December 2021;  Published: 08 September 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2203203

Abstract

Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) have increased gait disturbances throughout disease progression. However, an understanding of gait impairment and progression in early versus late AD is lacking. Further, the longitudinal progression of gait impairment in AD as well as in those with MCI that transition to AD is lacking. Understanding gait pathology and progression of gait impairment is critical for implementation of strategies that could limit the high prevalence of gait [...]

The Actual Situation of Covid-19 Infection at High Altitudes in Perú

Received: 03 August 2022;  Published: 12 December 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2204173

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the evolution and characteristics of the COVID-19 pandemic in high-altitude areas of Perú. An observational, descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study based on information from the Peruvian Ministry of Health, COVID-19 Situational Room, warning from the National Epidemiology Center, Prevention and Disease Control, and the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO) was conducted to analyze the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic in Perú from the beginning of the pandemic until March 7, [...]

Study and Characterization of a Spherical Solar Collector. I. Efficiency and Thermal Losses Coefficient

Received: 21 April 2023;  Published: 04 July 2023;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2303022

Abstract

This paper studies and characterizes a solar collector with spherical geometry to produce hot water for sanitary and domestic applications and other facilities. The new geometry enlarges the solar collector surface and allows full sun tracking during the day without needing a solar tracking system. Although this geometry has been in use for some time, its market penetration is low due to the lack of perfect knowledge of solar collector behavior and the benefits compared with conventional solar collectors. The studi [...]

Association between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Resilience in Frontline Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Vietnam

Received: 11 October 2023;  Published: 30 November 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2304199

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a considerable burden on frontline healthcare workers (HCWs), thus increasing their vulnerability to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our study aimed to examine the relationship between possible PTSD symptoms and resilience and identify associated factors with possible PTSD symptoms among Vietnamese frontline HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. We conducted a cross-sectional study across medical facilities at three administrative levels: provincial, district, [...]

COVID-19 Impact on Substance Use (Tobacco, Alcohol, Cannabis) and Stress in Medical Students

Received: 30 March 2024;  Published: 06 August 2024;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2403237

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented challenges globally, impacting various aspects of daily life, including education. This study examines the effects of the pandemic on stress levels and substance use among Italian medical students. Two independent surveys were conducted: 388 medical students were interviewed before the epidemic, and 222 medical students a year after the COVID-19 epidemic began. Results revealed significant changes in stress levels, with a reduction in mild stress and an increase in sev [...]
