Photodegradation of Polyethersulfone (PES), Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) and Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Microplastics via a Metal Organic Framework Namely ZIF-8/ZnO/C

Received: 27 August 2024;  Published: 17 October 2024;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2404019

Abstract

The aim of this study was to photodegrade the Polyethersulfone (PES), Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microplastics using Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/Zinc oxide/Carbon (ZIF-8/ZnO/C) nanocomposite generated under laboratory conditions. The produced nanocomposite was analysed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Photo Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra (DRS) and Electron Spin R [...]

Normal and Aberrant Muscle Tissue Healing, Learning from Health and Disease

Received: 28 March 2023;  Published: 19 September 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2303192

Abstract

Human skeletal muscle exhibits remarkable plasticity, being responsive to chemical, mechanical, metabolic, and inflammatory stress. When the homeostatic disturbance is below a threshold of significant damage, the muscle responds by modifying metabolic activity, cell size/shape, and structure, thereby normalizing cellular function. If the disturbance causes significant damage, skeletal muscle, along with a precisely choreographed response from the immune system, can regenerate. Very few pathological conditions inhib [...]

Enhancing the Wettability of Polyetheretherketone (Peek) Membrane with Ozone for Improving Fuel Cell Performance

Received: 21 August 2022;  Published: 06 December 2022;  doi: 10.21926/jept.2204040

Abstract

Ozone was reacted with the aromatic membrane polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to form oxidized functional groups on the surface to enhance the attraction and transport of protons in fuel cells. Ozonation of unsaturated C-C sp2 bonds in PEEK formed a primary ozonide which dissociated to primarily produce O=C-O/O=C-OH moieties, and the root mean squared roughness factor (Rq) decreased from 7.4 nm, for the untreated sample, down to 3.1 nm. The oxidation of the surface and decrease in surface roughness made the surface incr [...]

A Remarkable Pt Doped CNT Catalyst as a Double Functional Material: Its Application for Hydrogen Production and Supercapacitor

Received: 25 December 2023;  Published: 15 May 2024;  doi: 10.21926/cr.2402005

Abstract

In this study, by producing bifunctional material, hydrolysis, and supercapacitor applications were investigated. The carbon nanotube-supported Pt catalyst was prepared using the sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction. Surface characterization of the synthesized Pt/CNT catalyst was performed using scanning electron microscopy-energy dıstrıbutıon X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Hydrolysis experiments were performed after deciding on the appropriate ato [...]

Relationship between the Severity of Chest CT Scan Lesions, Arterial Oxygenation and Inflammatory Markers in High – Altitude Patients with Covid-19

Received: 01 December 2022;  Published: 19 April 2023;  doi: 10.21926/obm.genet.2302180

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between the severity of lung tomographic compromise with arterial oxygenation and inflammatory markers in patients with COVID-19, and to evaluate the relationship between the CTSS tomographic severity score and the mortality risk in a high-altitude population. A retrospective, longitudinal study reviewed medical records between January and July of 2021 at the Daniel Alcides Carrión Regional Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital in Huancayo. Categorical variables were anal [...]

Comparison of Household Environmental Factors among Children with Reported Asthma and Controls

Received: 09 December 2022;  Published: 16 March 2023;  doi: 10.21926/aeer.2301025

Abstract

The present research was part of a cross-sectional project involving children aged 8 to 10 years in Porto, Portugal. The project involved a first research part at primary schools where the health tests and a questionnaire were performed and a second research part concerning environmental conditions. Two groups emerged from the health questionnaire answers: one group that reported “asthma diagnosed by a doctor” and/or “wheezing or whistling in the chest during last 12 months” and another that answered negatively to [...]

Therapeutic Exercise Holds the Key to Improve Hand and Upper Limbs Dystonia Rehabilitation Programs: A Systematic Review

Received: 20 September 2024;  Published: 27 February 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.neurobiol.2501272

Abstract

Upper limb dystonia is a focal locomotion disorder affecting arm, forearm, and hand muscles, causing abnormal movements given by repeated, steady, and intercontinuous contractions. There are different types of dystonia and the multifaced nature of this pathology is challenging in the treatment management, leading to a worsening of affected patients’ life quality, mainly from a psychological point of view, but also from a functional perspective. This work examines the present literature regarding upper limb dystonia [...]

Physicochemical Characterization of Fresh and Powdered Tomato in Arba Minch, Ethiopia

Received: 07 January 2025;  Published: 02 June 2025;  doi: 10.21926/rpn.2502013

Abstract

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is the largest vegetable crop produced and consumed in the world. Tomatoes are a top source of Vitamin A and C, contain more dietary fibre, beta-carotene, iron, lycopene, magnesium, niacin, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, and thiamine. Tomatoes have a limited shelf life in ambient conditions and are highly perishable. It creates glut during the production season and becomes scanty during the off-season. Short shelf life, coupled with inadequate processing facilities results in he [...]

A Retrospective Study of Progressive Gait Impairment in Alzheimer’s Disease

Received: 27 December 2021;  Published: 08 September 2022;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2203203

Abstract

Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) have increased gait disturbances throughout disease progression. However, an understanding of gait impairment and progression in early versus late AD is lacking. Further, the longitudinal progression of gait impairment in AD as well as in those with MCI that transition to AD is lacking. Understanding gait pathology and progression of gait impairment is critical for implementation of strategies that could limit the high prevalence of gait [...]

Locked Plating Versus Retrograde Intramedullary Nailing in The Surgical Fixation of Periprosthetic Supra-condylar Knee Fractures: An Updated Systematic and Meta-Analysis Review

Received: 25 November 2024;  Published: 02 June 2025;  doi: 10.21926/obm.geriatr.2502315

Abstract

Meta-analysist to evaluate impact of Surgical Methods on Outcomes in periprosthetic supracondylar knee fracture management. This study examines the rate of functional outcomes and complications associated with two distinct surgical methods for the management of periprosthetic supracondylar knee fractures in patients treated with Low Contact Locking Plates (LCP) and Retrograde Intramedullary Nails (RIMN). With the growing prevalence of total knee replacements, the incidence of periprosthetic supracondylar knee fract [...]
