About This Topic
Advanced composite materials continue to play an increasingly important role in aerospace, energy, transportation, defense, marine, automotive, and other high-performance engineering applications. Their unique combination of high specific strength, stiffness, lightweight characteristics, corrosion resistance, and tailored multifunctional properties has enabled the development of next-generation structures capable of operating under demanding mechanical, thermal, and environmental conditions. As the use of advanced composites expands, understanding their structural behavior, durability, damage mechanisms, and long-term performance becomes essential for ensuring reliability, safety, and cost-effective operation.
This special issue focuses on recent advances in the structural behavior, mechanical performance, durability, characterization, modeling, and life prediction of advanced composite materials and composite-based systems. Contributions addressing polymer matrix composites (PMCs), metal matrix composites (MMCs), ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), hybrid composites, nanocomposites, multifunctional composites, fiber-reinforced materials, and composite coating systems are particularly encouraged.
The objective of this special Issue is to provide a forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge experimental, analytical, computational, and data-driven research related to the performance, degradation, and structural integrity of advanced composite materials. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the relationships among material architecture, manufacturing processes, environmental exposure, loading conditions, damage evolution, and long-term durability.
Contributions involving advanced non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for detecting, characterizing, and quantifying defects, damage, and degradation in composite materials and coating systems are also welcomed. Research integrating experimentally observed damage into analytical and computational models for structural integrity assessment and remaining-life prediction is of particular interest.
Topics of interest include material characterization, constitutive modeling, structural analysis, damage initiation and progression, fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, impact behavior, oxidation, moisture effects, thermal degradation, environmental damage, residual stresses, coating-substrate interactions, and life prediction methodologies. Research involving multiscale modeling, finite element analysis, digital image correlation, structural health monitoring, machine learning, uncertainty quantification, and physics-based durability modeling is especially welcome.
Original research articles, review papers, and case studies addressing both fundamental and applied aspects of advanced composite materials are invited. Contributions from academia, government laboratories, research institutions, manufacturers, suppliers, and end users are encouraged.
Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted through the LIDSEN Submission System. Detailed information on manuscript preparation and submission is available in the Instructions for Authors. All submitted articles will be thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process and will be processed following the Editorial Process and Quality Control policy. Upon acceptance, the article will be immediately published in a regular issue of the journal and will be listed together on the special issue website, with a label that the article belongs to the Special Issue. LIDSEN distributes articles under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) License in an open-access model. The authors own the copyright to the article, and the article can be free to access, distribute, and reuse provided that the original work is correctly cited.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). Research articles and review articles are highly invited. Authors are encouraged to send the tentative title and abstract of the planned paper to the Editorial Office (rpm@lidsen.com) for record. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Editorial Office.
