About This Topic

Photobiomodulation (PBM), formerly known as low-level laser therapy, has evolved from an experimental technique into a recognized modality within integrative and complementary medicine. Since the first clinical observations in the 1960s, our understanding of its biological mechanisms—particularly its effects on mitochondrial function, inflammation, and cellular regeneration—has grown significantly.

Today, PBM is applied in diverse therapeutic contexts, including pain management, wound healing, neurological disorders, sports medicine, and various complementary medicine approaches. Technological innovations, improved dosing strategies, and increasing clinical evidence have contributed to the growing acceptance and potential of PBM in both research and clinical practice.

This Special Issue aims to explore PBM from a comprehensive perspective—its historical development, current applications, and future directions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanistic studies on PBM and cellular biology
  • Clinical efficacy in integrative and complementary medicine contexts
  • Advances in light-based technologies and treatment protocols
  • PBM in neurorehabilitation, pain management, and immune modulation
  • Personalized PBM strategies and AI-supported applications
  • Methodological challenges and standardization in PBM research
  • All other related fields to PBM

We invite original research articles, systematic reviews, case reports, and perspective pieces that contribute to the interdisciplinary understanding of PBM. Submissions are welcome from researchers, clinicians, and practitioners across the fields of biomedicine, complementary medicine, and medical technology.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted through the LIDSEN Submission System. Detailed information on manuscript preparation and submission is available in the Instructions for Authors. All submitted articles will be thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process and will be processed following the Editorial Process and Quality Control policy. The authors own the copyright to the article, and the article can be free to access, distribute, and reuse provided that the original work is correctly cited.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). Research articles and review articles are highly invited. Authors are encouraged to send the tentative title and abstract of the planned paper to the Editorial Office (icm@lidsen.com) for record. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Editorial Office.

Welcome your submission!
