About This Topic

Spiritual well-being is widely recognized as a core dimension of palliative and end-of-life care, yet spiritual and existential needs often remain under-assessed and insufficiently addressed in clinical practice. Patients facing life-threatening illness, their families and the professionals who care for them may experience loss of meaning, hopelessness, fear of death and concerns about dignity and continuity of the self, with consequences for quality of life, the dying process and bereavement.

This Special Issue invites contributions on interventions and care models that support spiritual well-being at the end of life, including psychological approaches (e.g., dignity therapy, meaning-centered and existential interventions), arts-based approaches (e.g., music, art, drama and narrative therapies, photovoice) and integrative practices (e.g., mindfulness and other mind-body interventions). We are also interested in studies on spiritual assessment, cultural and religious diversity, secular forms of spirituality, family and caregiver experiences, grief and continuing bonds, and the training and well-being of healthcare professionals.

Original research using quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods, systematic and scoping reviews, and theoretical papers are all welcome.
