About This Topic

Nervous system diseases are not completely understood, leading to inadequate and dangerous medications used to treat them.  Serum sickness, anaphylaxis, cytokine release syndrome and other side effects can result from the use of monoclonal antibody therapy in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other conditions.  This issue seeks to expand our understanding of mechanisms of neurological diseases.  A question of vital concern is: what is the mechanism of chronic pain and can it be cured?  In addition, work on complementary and alternative medicines for neurological conditions will be important.  Questions of interest are: is there a better way to treat Alzheimer’s disease than monoclonal antibodies against amyloid and tau; is there a better way to treat Parkinson’s disease than monoclonal antibodies against alpha-synuclein?  Are there safe and effective treatments for neurological conditions that come from complementary and alternative medicines?  Is there a role for acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of neurological disorders?  Can massage and other touch therapies be used effectively in these diseases?  Is there a purpose for exercise therapy in the management of neurological diseases?
