About This Topic
Mindfulness is a modern term for an ancient practice, which defines a mental process of simultaneous intentional attention, focus on the present moment, and attitude of non-judgement. The implementation of mindfulness for chronic pain and health conditions has spanned 5 decades and it has been heralded for its transdiagnostic utility.
The focus of this special issue is to advance scholarship on the innovative application of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) as a treatment for individuals with chronic pain and as a strategy for the prevention of chronic pain. Priority areas of interest include randomized clinical trials evaluating both standardized MBIs (e.g., Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and novel psychological treatments that incorporate mindfulness for diverse chronic pain conditions and limited mobility; MBIs for perioperative and peri-procedural populations aimed at reducing the transition from acute to chronic pain; studies demonstrating methodological rigor, including comparative effectiveness, and investigations of mechanisms and mediators of change. Mechanistic studies exploring psychological, biological, and neurophysiological pathways are of interest, including research examining pain-related psychological and cognitive factors (e.g., pain catastrophizing, pain self-efficacy, psychological flexibility, emotion regulation, interoceptive awareness, attentional processes), quantitative sensory testing, experimental pain paradigms, neuroimaging, electroencephalography (EEG), biomarker-based approaches, autonomic nervous system measures, and other methods that advance understanding of how mindfulness practices influence pain perception, pain modulation, and outcomes. Original empirical research, systematic or scoping reviews, meta-analyses, conceptual and theoretical papers, and case studies will be considered.
OBM Integrative and Complementary Medicine is delighted to invite submissions for a special issue on "Advancing mindfulness research for chronic pain: Clinical effectiveness, prevention and mechanisms."
