About This Topic

The increasing pressures on global water systems due to climate change, population growth, and industrial demand have made sustainable water management more critical than ever. To ensure water security, resilience, and environmental sustainability, there is a growing need to integrate smart technologies, data-driven decision-making, and innovative engineering practices into water resource planning and operations.

This special issue focuses on the intersection of sustainability and digital innovation in water resources management. It aims to highlight emerging solutions and practical strategies that enhance water use efficiency, improve system monitoring and control, support informed policy-making, and promote resilience in the face of hydrological and climatic uncertainties.

With advances in IoT, AI, digital twins, remote sensing, and real-time data analytics, water systems can now be managed more intelligently—optimising performance, reducing losses, and supporting adaptive infrastructure. Meanwhile, the importance of community engagement, equitable access, and ecological preservation must remain central to sustainable development goals.

This issue welcomes contributions that explore both technical and interdisciplinary approaches, including smart infrastructure, nature-based solutions, climate adaptation strategies, and socio-economic implications in water governance.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Smart monitoring, sensing, and Internet of Things for water networks
  • AI and Machine Learning applications in water resources modelling and management
  • Digital Twins and simulation tools for sustainable water infrastructure
  • Water quality forecasting and decision support systems
  • Urban water systems and climate-resilient infrastructure
  • Nature-based and integrated water management approaches
  • Community-led water governance and stakeholder engagement
  • Water-energy nexus and resource recovery
  • Case studies on real-world implementations of smart water systems

Original research articles, review papers, case studies, and perspective pieces that contribute to the advancement of smart and sustainable water resource management are encouraged.

Keywords:

  • Smart Water Systems
  • Sustainable Water Management
  • IoT And AI in Water
  • Climate-Resilient Infrastructure
  • Digital Twins
  • Water-Energy Nexus
  • Nature-Based Solutions
  • Water Governance
  • Environmental Monitoring

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted through the LIDSEN Submission System. Detailed information on manuscript preparation and submission is available in the Instructions for Authors. All submitted articles will be thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process and will be processed following the Editorial Process and Quality Control policy. Upon acceptance, the article will be immediately published in a regular issue of the journal and will be listed together on the special issue website, with a label that the article belongs to the Special Issue. LIDSEN distributes articles under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) License in an open-access model. The authors own the copyright to the article, and the article can be free to access, distribute, and reuse provided that the original work is correctly cited.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). Research articles and review articles are highly invited. Authors are encouraged to send the tentative title and abstract of the planned paper to the Editorial Office (aeer@lidsen.com) for record. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Editorial Office.
