About This Topic

Soil contamination is an increasingly important environmental challenge associated with intensive agricultural practices, industrial development, mining, inadequate waste management practices, urbanization, and the widespread use of chemical products. In addition to well-known contaminants such as pesticides, fertilizers, and trace metals, soils are increasingly affected by emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals, microplastics, PFAS, and antibiotic resistance determinants. Their persistence, mobility, transformation, and interactions with soil components may alter soil functions and pose risks to soil biodiversity, water resources, food security, and human health. Therefore, a better understanding of pollution mechanisms and soil–pollutant interactions, together with effective monitoring and risk assessment, is essential for protecting soil quality and ecosystem services. This Special Issue welcomes contributions addressing, but are not limited to, the occurrence, fate, and transformation of conventional and emerging contaminants; monitoring plans and risk assessment; pollutant–soil interactions and their effects on soil properties and biological processes; ecological and human health risks; and innovative and sustainable approaches to soil remediation. Studies providing new insights into the challenges posed by soil pollution and the pathways towards safer and more sustainable soils are especially encouraged.
