About This Topic

The relationship between digitalisation and sustainable business practice is gaining in significance for both academic researchers and business practitioners. At the same time, the role of digital technologies in supporting environmental management is attracting renewed focus in the context of sustainability and the transition to the circular economy. Studies to date indicate a lack of clarity as regards the interaction of these concepts in practice. Using digital technologies to drive through business efficiencies and also meet sustainability targets remains a key challenge for most organisations. Equally, the potential of digital technologies in progressing the adoption of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those that relate to environmental management (SDGs 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15) remains a keenly researched field of study. This Special Issue addresses these issues by examining the multiple relationships and interactions between these concepts. Studies adopting either qualitative or quantitative research approaches are welcome, as are studies based on systematic reviews. Both practical applications and contributions to theory development are within the overall scope of the Special Issue. Topics that could be covered include (but are not restricted to) the following:

  • How the new and emergent technologies are facilitating the progression of SDGs.
  • How digitalisation is facilitating circular and sustainable business practices.
  • How digital technologies are facilitating improved environmental management in both urban and rural environments.
  • The relationship between environmental practice and policy and the adoption of sustainability practices.
  • The role of the new and emergent technologies in engendering circular practices in industry and society at large.
  • Technological innovations in waste reduction, emissions reduction, resource efficiency or environmental performance in business contexts.
  • Theoretical frameworks for the analysis of technology deployment, sustainability and environmental management.
  • Specific case studies from both developed or developing worlds which illustrate some of the above themes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted through the LIDSEN Submission System. Detailed information on manuscript preparation and submission is available in the Instructions for Authors. All submitted articles will be thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process and will be processed following the Editorial Process and Quality Control policy. Upon acceptance, the article will be immediately published in a regular issue of the journal and will be listed together on the special issue website, with a label that the article belongs to the Special Issue. LIDSEN distributes articles under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) License in an open-access model. The authors own the copyright to the article, and the article can be free to access, distribute, and reuse provided that the original work is correctly cited.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers).
