RCA is characterized by the presence of attached mortar from previous concrete applications, which significantly influences the mechanical properties of the aggregates, as well as mix design and the overall performance of new concrete incorporating these recycled materials. This paper provides a comprehensive review of various aspects related to RCA, encompassing its production, inherent properties, and economic considerations. It provides a detailed analysis of specific attributes of recycled concrete aggregates such as shape, particle density, water absorption, abrasion resistance, and mortar content, and reveals their implications on mix design processes. Furthermore, the paper critically examines and discusses both the fresh and hardened properties of concrete utilizing recycled concrete aggregate.
