A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis JO - OBM Integrative and Complementary Medicine SP - 052 VL - 04 IS - 03 AB - This systematic review investigated whether acute aerobic exercise improves following set-shifting performance in healthy young individuals using meta-analytic techniques. Moreover, it was examined if the after-effect of acute aerobic exercise on set-shifting performance in healthy young adults is moderated by the methodological quality of studies and what role small-study effect plays. Studies were identified using electronic databases Medline, PsycINFO and SPORTDiscus as well as references of recent meta-analyses and included studies. In total, 12 studies were included into qualitative synthesis. Eleven studies, containing data from 1,189 healthy young individuals, were eligible for inclusion into meta-analysis. The effect size of each trial was calculated as bias corrected Hedges’ g standardized mean difference. A random-effects model was used to pool outcomes across studies. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to investigate influence of outliers. Potential moderation of study quality on effect size estimates was done using meta-regression. A small to moderate significant beneficial after-effect of acute aerobic exercise on set-shifting performance compared to control (Hedges’ g = -.27, 95 % CI -.53 to -.00, p = .049) with large true heterogeneity was revealed (I2 = 74.9 %, Q=43.81, p SN - 2573-4393 UR - https://doi.org/10.21926/obm.icm.1903052 DO - 10.21926/obm.icm.1903052 ID - Oberste2019 ER -
