TY - JOUR AU - Freeman Clevenger, Sharon PY - 2019 DA - 2019/01/31 TI - Is Self-Compassion Important for Health Care Practitioners? JO - OBM Integrative and Complementary Medicine SP - 007 VL - 04 IS - 01 AB - The cornerstone of health care practice is the provision of competent, compassionate care. Compassion is usually thought of when applied toward others; however, self-compassion promotes well-being, mental health, reduces fatigue and “burn-out” in health care practitioners. While most health care practitioners would agree with the importance of demonstrating compassion, a troubling report found that medical students who are approaching the end of their education; which, is when the highest amount of direct patient care occurs, tend to exhibit fewer caring behaviors and less empathy in general (1). This article reviews the benefit of developing self-compassion in health care providers for their own well-being as well as the health of their patients.
