Previous research on cognitive reserve outlined how characteristics of the brain promote good cognitive functioning, but it is not yet clear what cognitive processes help individuals to maintain a good cognitive functioning if the brain is damaged. (2) Methods: Literature search cognitive and/or psychometric characteristics of cognitive reserve with a narrative review of relevant articles. (3) Results: The existing evidence on cognitive processes of cognitive reserve is extremely sparse. Results from a diverse set of studies suggest that cognitive reserve may comprise verbal memory and executive functions. (4) Conclusions: The authors propose that cognitive reserve may be a combination of elaborated webs of mental representations and proficient executive functioning. Future studies need to validate the proposed cognitive mechanism of cognitive reserve.
