Elderly people are vulnerable with regard to poor health, and the number of hospitalized elderly patients has been increasing rapidly. A marked increase of elderly patients may weaken the economy because of the burden of medical expenses. Therefore, it is important for both society and the individual to reduce the incidence of geriatric diseases such as aspiration pneumonia among elderly people. Although family care is often considered to be effective for managing geriatric diseases, early detection of relevant symptoms by the family might be more significant clinically. Suitable preventive care may be provided in the home by families before the onset of geriatric disease, if several risk factors are understood in advance by the caregivers. The present review article focused on hospitalized elderly patients and investigated the influence of coexisting risk factors such as poor oral health on the geriatric conditions.
